Racial discrimination is a major social issue that affects our society in an adverse manner. Racial discrimination garbles the social fabric substantially and affects people of weaker racial groups. Racial discrimination also causes the sufferers to develop a sense of hatred in their mind against the society which is very harmful for the society. This paper intends to discuss the racial discrimination, causes and how the problem can be effectively addressed.
The idea of race was conceptualised by the dominating groups in order to continue their supremacy and to exploit the weaker sections of the society. The trend is continued and the dominating sections are not ready yet to understand that racial discrimination can affect the society in the most adverse manner. There are some major factors behind the existence of such social evil in our society and selfishness is on top of them (Marger, 2002).
Stereotyping people of a particular racial group is a major factor that keeps the racial discrimination sustained in the society. Stereotyping by other groups, media, television and police is even more dangerous. When any individual or some people of a racial groups are involved in illegal activities, they are stereotyped as criminals. Police and society labels people of such groups as criminals and they pay the heavy price of such negative stereotyping.
Humans are selfish creatures. Sometimes, they do anything in order to fulfil their own interests. Stereotyping an individual or any racial group as inferior or incompetent is an effort to deprive them of the resources that is captured by the dominating groups of the society. Dominating groups know that once these people will be able to access resources, they can improve their life and then they may face competition from the people who are stereotyped as inferior (Marger, 2002).
Economic insufficiencyof some groups may label them as poor and incompetent. They are considered that these people are poor just because they are incompetent. Such categorization by the dominating section of the society affects people of a particular race. Racial discrimination African Americans, Mexican Americans and Asians are some racial groups that are subjected to racial discriminations in the United States of America though racial discriminations are found in every society across the world.
Racial discrimination is prevailing in every aspect of life and hampering the growth of people belongs to specific group or race. People do not received equal employment or education opportunities because their skin colour is different. Even at work they received low wages as compare to their co-workers who have same knowledge and experience. Employers discriminate workers not only at the time of making hiring or providing wages, but also at the time of promotion and appraisals (Marger, 2002).
Racial discrimination creates challenges for specific groups in getting jobs and earning their livelihood. Government formed various laws to protect the interest of these groups and allow them to receive fair opportunities at workplace and in society. However, the laws formed to handle racial discrimination are not able to control this social problem from the grass roots. Special groups such African Americans, Asians, and Mexican Americans still treated badly, and not provided with equal work opportunities.
Having observed the succinct analysis of the abovementioned subject, it can be concluded that racial discrimination is very harmful for our society. This issue directly affects the social fabric of our society in a negative manner and makes it vulnerable for other problems. Racial discrimination should be stopped without any further delay in order to make our society a better place for every human being.
