Social problem pertains to a condition, to which some or many people within the society view as an undesirable thing. There are various social problems that were discussed in the readings that provided emphasis on their significance as well as how they affect the everyday lives of the society. Thus, everyone would understand and agree about these social problems, such as robberies and murders. On the other hand, some of the social problems may have been viewed by other groups of individuals as such. Either way, social problems remain as challenges, not only for authorities, but for the whole society itself.
Every person has his or her own view of a social problem. One would view a group of people having a good time as a social problem, while the others would see it as a form of natural event that happens everywhere. Some non-smokers would view smoking as one of the social problems, while smokers would not have the same point of view. Indeed, different actions and events in the society may or may not be viewed as part of the social problem, depending on the person’s definition and perspective of the term “social problem”. The social perspectives of the people may have influenced by their view about the social world. To put simply, such perspectives are just the way that people look at world on a broader standpoint.
Some people would have a social perspective that views the society as a form of system that encompasses different parts, which work together in order to provide a state of balance as a whole. In other words, social problems happen due to existence social factors that created such problems; hence, the solution for every social problem was created based on the inter-connectivity between the problems and its social affects. Moreover, social problems may have been viewed as such due to conflict in society’s beliefs. For instance, one would view abortion as a social problem, while the other view it as a solution to unwanted pregnancy, overpopulation, and other personal perspective. It is also interesting to learn about how people react due to the existence of conflicts, such as different groups of people who have different beliefs and interests. We might think that this conflict may have been the reason as to why larger social problems happen such as sexism, racism, and many other social issues due to people’s differences in many aspects. However, these conflicts in the society may have been one of the reasons why social change happens, such as development of new ideas and perspectives about race and ethnicity, which may have been different decades ago.
The stages of social problem also provides interesting ideas, to which it enables us to understand that social problems do not become nationwide issues on the spot, but it is primarily understood, to which additional problems will be brought up. In this case, it is important there should be an official response that will raise such problem to wider public in order to develop initiatives to prevent further impacts of the problem.
Therefore, it is important to think critically when looking at the social problems, as there might be some underlying issues that need to be addressed first so that the problem itself will no longer arise. For instance, the conflict between people that produce social problems may have been due to wealth inequality and poverty. People who have more opportunities when it comes to wealth could be in conflict with those who have less. Thus, inequality within different race and ethnicity is a social problem that may have been the effect of different perspectives towards people of different race and beliefs. That is why; we must understand that social problems hold underlying issues that have caused such problem to become one. It is better that perspective towards one another must not be based upon the wealth, race, ethnicity, beliefs, and other indifferences in order to prevent the potential development of social problems.
