Good Example Of Sound And Fury Essay

The movie “Sound and Fury” tackles the issue of whether the parents of deaf children have the right to prevent their children from being part of the hearing world. The two opposing issues are presented in the movie.
Why should a person be deprived of the opportunity to be cured and have his sense of hearing? The mere fact that the opportunity was presented to the family means that God has intended for their child to hear again. If the possibility of being able to hear again through the implant, is very high, one finds no reason why the family should not push through with it. One does not think that parents have the right to choose whether their child should be able to hear or not. One thinks that more than anyone else, it is the person with disability who must decide for himself. If he decides to remain deaf all his life, then so be it. But if he decides that he wants an implant, no one should stop him from having one.
Is it considered a betrayal of the deaf culture if a deaf person chooses to undergo a cochlear implant? One does not think so. In the movie, one can observe how Nita is controlling her daughter Heather by deciding for her. It is obvious that Heather wants a cochlear implant. At first, Nita welcomes the idea but later disapproves of it. It appears that just because she would not benefit from the implant, which she also wants, she does not want Heather to have the operation too. One thinks that it is pure selfishness on Nita’s part, which she is trying to cover up by saying that having the implant signifies an infidelity to the deaf culture. It seems that she does not want Heather to have a full life. It is as if she wants her daughter to suffer like how she is suffering with her disability.
Having a cochlear implant is not a threat to the culture of the deaf, nor is it a threat to their language, the American Sign Language. The only threat that one can speak of in the movie is depicted in Nita’s character. One thinks that she is threatened by the possibility that Heather will be able to hear. She is probably threatened by what Heather may be able to accomplish once she is able to hear. She is threatened because she is not given the same opportunity.
Heather’s family should look further into the benefits of having their daughter hear. In her later years, she could probably be a defender of the deaf, someone who will fight for their rights. Her parents should not see otherwise. They should welcome the idea of the implant with open arms. Heather’s parents of all people, are in the best position to know how difficult it is to be deaf. They should be happy that they can free Heather of that type of burden. If Heather benefits from the implant, then she can be part of both worlds, the deaf community and the hearing community. She can communicate with the deaf and still communicate with those without the disability. That is one positive side which Heather’s parents should realize.
In conclusion, one can say that although the movie presented the two sides of cochlear implant, one still is of the belief that no deaf person should be deprived of the operation, if the opportunity presents itself and if the appropriate funding is provided.
