1) Stress is a normal occurrence but what it does to human body is not normal at all. It can cause death. As presented in the documentary film “Stress: A Portrait of a Killer,” stress shuts down a person’s immune system that in return, activates bad bacteria inside the body that can cause several kinds of diseases. When people are anticipating stress, it shuts down some of the essential biological function. This is also the same with Zebra as when they face stress, they momentarily shuts down or even damage their other biological function. It is their survival mechanism in order for them to focus on attacking their predator.
2) Stressors can cause heart attack. When the blood pressure shoots up, the heart fails to pump blood to the brain. The arteries cannot expand making the flow of blood slow. If this is not managed quickly, it will eventually lead to cardiovascular attack.
3) Decades ago, there was a mainstream mantra in the medicine world that stress causes ulcer. It was until medical researchers in Australia found out that there is no connection between stress and ulcer because a certain kind of bacteria causes it. However, years earlier, the connection between the two was resurged. Study said that those kinds of bacteria that causes ulcer are present in every individual. It only causes ulcer when the immune system of a person shuts down due to stress, and those kinds of bacteria work rapidly.
4) In the documentary film, it presented that social hierarchy has an impact on the levels of stress that people suffer. A case study of an associate and the CEO shows that the associate has a higher level of stress than the CEO. Meanwhile, the dominant baboon has a lower stress level than the subordinate. Dr. Sapolsky proved it with his three decades of stress research in the Kenyan forest reserve in Africa.
5) Sapolsky also found out that there is a possibility of a less-stress society. In the population of his research, a disaster happened that made a turning point for his findings. The Kikarach troop of baboons ate foods contaminated that caused the death of the many dominant baboons. The death resulted to a thriving environment for surviving baboons subordinates as the troop began to live with less stressor.
Sapolsky mentioned that if human beings can only learn from the baboons’ experience, then people from any social stratification can thrive. In the Whitehall workplace studies, the associate who previously suffered huge stress from his boss is happier because his new boss is constructive. He mentioned that he is encouraged to share his thoughts. The new boss he added welcomes criticisms for the betterment of his leadership.
