How VOIP Works.
Chris Woodford in his article explains the workings of VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) through the analysis of Skype (a popular internet telephony software). Chris maintains that telephone technology has remained almost the same since the 19th century and in the 21st century one must be using the better available technologies of the internet. The technological advancements have not only made it possible to communicate with other people in a fast and efficient manner but also reduced the cost for the same. In the article, Chris describes the functioning of VOIP, detailing Call Signaling, Call transmission, interfacing with the telephone network and different types of VOIP. The section on technological capabilities and functioning of VOIP are detailed, very informational and presents the topic in a very simple manner. Chris discusses the advantages and disadvantages of VOIP and dedicates a separate section on workings of Skype. A chronological history of VOIP invention is provided along with a paragraph on the future growth of VOIP (Woodford).
The topic of the chapter “How VOIP Works” is covered under the article of Chris Woodford. The fourth heading in the article is the same as that of the chapter topic. Under this heading Chris explain the workings of VOIP that how The Internet is used to send a telephone call. The workings of Call Signaling, Call transmission and Interfacing with the telephone network are discussed. These three are important aspects of converting a person’s voice into digital sound and sending and receiving it over the Net.
The article is very informative, and it presents the functioning and workings on VOIP in a very simple manner. Chris Woodford has presented a complicated topic in a very simple manner. Chris starts the article with an opening paragraph that provides a thought-provoking statement that in the 21st century why we are using the technology of 19th century. The article briefly talks about the internet although it is not required since knowledge f internet is very common. For me, as well, this section of the article was not a knowledge edition as I already know about the internet. Further, in the article Chris explains about VOIP and its workings. Under the working section, the three important components of call-signaling called transmission and interfacing with the telephone network are presented in a detailed and technical manner. These three are a highly technical section that talks about protocols involved in VOIP, CODECS, and Gateways. These three sections help me in understanding and gaining a knowledge of VOIP functioning. It is very useful as I got to know about how exactly VOIP works and the section that presents the workings of Skype as the knowledge with a real life VOIP technology and software. Skype is proprietary software that uses its own peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol. This section of the working of the Skype has been very valuable as I have been already using the Skype but through this article, I got to know its functioning. Then the article talks about different types of VOIP advantageous and disadvantageous and the future growth. In the end is a summary of VOIP history that is a very valuable information.
