Theory and the rationale for selecting the theoryEnvironmental theory is one of the nursing theories by Nightingale. This theory incorporated the restoration of the standard health status of both nurses and clients into the delivery of healthcare. The theory has its bases on the fact that nursing is an act of environmental utilization of the patient so as to assist him in his recovery. That means that the nurse has to be initiative so as to configure the environmental settings that are appropriate for the gradual restoration of the patient’s health as well as the external factors that are associated with the surroundings of the patient affecting physiological or biologic processes, as well as the patient’s development. In addition, provision of a noise free and warm environment is also emphasized in the theory. Attending to patients needs by assessment, food intake documentation and evaluation of the effects to a patient is also emphasized. How the theory works to support the proposed solution. The theory works very well in the support the proposed solution because of the many environmental factors that affect the health. Some of them are pure fresh air, pure water, effective drainage, cleanliness and light especially the direct sunlight. Any deficiency in the factors can lead to an impaired functioning of the processes of life as well as diminished status of health. The environmental theory has seven assumptions that are also helpful in supporting the proposed solution. These assumptions are natural laws, nursing is a calling mankind can achieve perfection, nursing is a science and an art, nursing is achieved through the alteration of the environment, nursing is different from medicine and nursing requires an education base that is specific. Hence the focus of this model is an alteration of the environment of the patient so as to affect change in the patient’s health. The environmental nursing theory is a patient-care theory, hence focusing on the patient’s care rather than the nursing process. In this way, this model must be adapted so as to fit needs of the patient. This makes the theory to be supportive to the proposed project. How to incorporate the theory into the projectThough the theory was pioneered at the time of creation, its principals are timeless and can be incorporated into projects for better outcomes.Nursing being different from medicine according to the theory, it is easy to incorporate it into the project. This is because the goal of nursing is putting the patient in a condition that is best possible so that nature can act. In addition, nursing being the activity promoting health and occurring in any situation where there is care-giving it also becomes easy to incorporate the theory into the project. Health being seen as not only being well, but the ability to use every power also makes the theory applicable in the project. The theory has also served as a foundation of many practices in nursing and research in many settings. This includes the succeeding conceptual theories and frameworks in the nursing field hence it will easily be incorporated into the project. The theory can be incorporated on issues concerning the environment and health. This is because the theory will help in dealing with the environmental issues while maintaining the health standards of the people.
