The city of New York and the Dead
Every human being dies alone. However, some human beings die in much more solitude compared to others. In the city of New York, the treatment of the dead greatly shadows the city’s striking pursuit for success. Unlike other cities which honour their dead, the city of New York treats dead residents with no value. If you happened to pass on with no family or friends, the city isolates you in Hart Island for eternity. Hart Island is an island located in the city of New York. It is a small island. The island is uninhabited by the living. This is because it is a burial ground to the city of New York. It is the largest potter’s field in the world (Jackson et al. 35). More than a million people have been declared dead and buried here. These include babies died during childbirth, those unclaimed by the time of their passing and corpses belonging to families who couldn’t afford a traditional burial ceremony. The graveyards in the island are the most tax supported graveyards on the planet (Jackson et al. 43).
At Hart Island, the remains of the dead are often treated with little value. Their disposal is often managed via numerous bureaucracy processes. Often, their burials are conducted by inmates from the nearby Rikers Island prison. The city pays them 50 cents every hour for this task. Each year, the prisoners handle close to 1400 corpses. These burials take place every other week. The corpses are buried in wooden coffins. Their graves are often left unmarked. These burials take place in an unattractive setting far away from the public eye. Tourists and locals alike are often refrained from visiting the island (Nelson et al. 72). Recently, a movement steered by Melinda Hunt called for New York City to open up Hart Island. This was to enable friends and family of the deceased pay their respects. New York dwellers can look forward to a future in which the dead will also have a voice.
The city of New York and Signs
The designs of modern cities such as the city of New York have greatly been influenced by maps. This has encouraged the adoption of signs to identify various roads and streets. In New York City for instance, street signage is an incorporation of the demands of modern day standardization. Streets in New York City have largely been named using the grid system. These street name signs are largely found posted at intersections. Furthermore, they usually are oriented perpendicularly to identify each other. For example, 4nd and 16th commonly insinuate an intersection point of two lines perpendicular to the grid of the city. Also, street names usually are mounted on poles. In some instances, street names can be seen hanging over an intersection from overhead provisions. These street names largely indicate numbers of houses found nearby. Others indicate alternative names for a street. For example, “Fashion Avenue” is an alternative name for Seventh Avenue in the city of New York. Most streets in New York City are also attached to a traffic sign. These are used to indicate the name of the road.
