The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is one of the most famous works of literature in the recent times. It has won the hearts of millions with its content and aesthetic appeal. The novel stirs the avid readers to the innermost core of their hearts. The characters leave an everlasting mark with their qualities and actions.
Hassan is a brave boy with a big heart.
- Hassan comes across as a strong character right from the inception of the novel. In spite of being lower in social class, he has the strength of character to save Amir from the hands of the three boys who harass him for playing with a lower class boy- Hassan.
- He never reveals being raped by the three, and even admits to having stolen the money, although he did not.
Amir lacks conscience, and is scared of the reality.
- In stark contrast, Amir is a very weak character in the younger days of his life. He is incapable of answering back to the three boys.
- He even turns a blind eye to the incident of rape, and does not help Hassan in any way.
- Later, he even indicts Hassan falsely, so that he is not guilt-stricken himself.
Hassan shows loyalty and maturity as he returns with his wife, years later, to Amir’s ancestral house in Kabul.
- He dies at the hands of the Taliban, and his son goes to the orphanage.
Amir grows to be a conscientious man with grit and courage by the end of the novel.
- Coming to know of Hassan’s death, Amir, now a married childless man returns to save Sohrab, Hassan’s son. He finds him out. But as he comes to know that the legal bondages might not let him adopt Sohrab, he tells that to him.
