Resentment is at the centre of the fiction. Most characters in play are resentful of others. George’s refusal to accept the marriage between Ann and Chris shows resentment. He claims that the family of Chris is responsible for their problem. The keller’s, according to George made their father to be arrested. George opposes the marriage between Ann and Chris because he believes that it is Joe who had destroyed their family. Joe’s father hates Joes according to the story told by George.
Sue is resentful of Chris. She blames Chris of Harming a bad influence on her husband Jim. She tells this to Ann, the girlfriend to Chris about how she feels about Chris.
Denial is also demonstrated in the play. Kate does not want to hear anything that suggests that her son Larry is dead. Larry had disappeared soon after the word war and no one knows his whereabouts. Other people seem to have moved on with their lives but Kate has not. Kate’s son, Chris intends to marry Larry’s girlfriend. However, they cannot convince Kate that Chris is dead so that the marriage can proceed.
She does not want to hear the fact that Larry may have died in an accident. She relies on Frank to determine by way of horoscopes whether Larry is dead or alive. Kate refuses to accept the marriage between Chris and Ann because she believes that Larry is still alive.
Chris and Ann do not want to believe that Joe is guilty. Chris runs a way because he does not want to believe that his father is guilty.
Betrayal is another theme in the play. Joe betrays Steve the father to Ann by letting him supply cracked cylinders. He admits this when confronted by Kate. He claims that he did it in order to provide for his family.
Betrayal is also revealed by the conduct of Chris. He does not confirm whether his brother is dead is alive but goes on to propose to his girlfriend.Betrayal is also depicted by George. He had been a long time friend of Chris Keller but refuses to accept his marriage to the sister.
Selfishness also appears predominantly in the play. Some characters in the Fictions show selfishness. The characters are interested in their own personal gains. Chris no longer cares whether his brother is alive or dead. He wants Joe to convince the Kate that his Larry is dead so that his can proceed with his marriage to Ann. He would be expected to be bothered about the disappearance of his brother as the mother is bothered. He makes no attempt at searching for his brother. However, when he disappears Jim offers to find him.
The statement made by Ann about her resentment for Chris and the Statement made by George against the keller Family supports the central theme of resentment.
The title of the book relates to the central theme of resentment. The characters have issues against each but they must live together. George hates the keller’s for what they have done but his sister is bound to marry Ann. All the people have issues against each other but they are united by certain bonds.
There are conflicts between relationships and resentment. Ann wants to be married to Chris but she wants to be convinced that Joe was not responsible of her father’s arrest. Sue also does not like the relationship between Chris and Jim yet they are friends. Ann and Jim want to believe that Larry is dead so that they can proceed with their marriage but Kate is on the opposite side, refusing any suggestion that her son could be dead.
Proper scenery setting has been used in the movie in manner that enhances the flow of the play. It setting and the music reinforce the major themes in the play.
