MIS Project: The Nokia Company
Nokia Company is one of the market leaders in communication and innovation technology in the world. The company deals in mobile devices and computers among other electronic devices that facilitate communication and innovation management. Nokia operates globally with the business roots of the company spreading to all the continents of the world. The company has offices in over 100 countries around the world, making it one of the blue chips in innovation and communication industry. Nokia produces, stores, and distributes a wide range of services including mobile phones, tracking devices, electronic monitoring devices, communication networks and security systems (Bélanger 1018). However, what interests more about the company are not the products that the company offers, but the level of creativity in the organization. Management Information Systems form the base rock of the organization with modern technology applied in different areas of management. This paper analyzes the company management information systems based on interviews and analysis of the company data.
Nokia Corporation uses a management information system technology known as ACM-MIS Lite, considered as one of the most effective management information systems developed by Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) (Jari and Lorenzin 422). The system collects all the information from the customers when they purchase the products, use the products, or engage in promotions, which is later put into the decision-making channels in the organization. The company uses an incorporating strategic management strategy that allows for information from all the stakeholders including the customers to be used in management and more precisely, decision making. As mobile manufacturers and device distributers in the global economy, the Nokia management Information systems incorporate many systems together for the sake of efficiency, cost minimization, and customer satisfaction. The management information systems work through a well-coordinated system network that ensures that all the devices have server connectivity and all of them can be directed to a monitoring and evaluation centre.
The interviewees revealed that the company uses different information system centers and device management strategies in different departments. Nokia uses two management information systems for the clients. Nokia IP VPN helps in the connection of clients to remote networks and promotes data security in the exchange of information. The Nokia IP VPN network management information system, according to one of the interviewees, helps in extending safe network connection with the management monitoring the data roaming and management issues. The Nokia SSL VPN is another management information system used by the Nokia clients (Jari and Lorenzin 422). The SSL network connects the businesses, providing them with an SSL browser that can be monitored by the management. It provides easy connectivity to the businesses while allowing the management to monitor the activities in terms of communication and connectivity in the businesses. Concisely, the VPN management information systems in Nokia Corporation help the company in the management of client operations and relations.
Nokia operates widely in mobile communication business. OMA device management is the second management Information system mainly designed for the mobile devices. The management needs to know the sales they make worldwide and keep a record of their incomes. Through the OMA device management systems, the management can observe and keep a record of the mobile devices sold and used worldwide. However, the OMA device management systems perform a range of other functions apart from helping the management to keep track of the circulated devices (Jari and Lorenzin 422). Firstly, it enables the user to get mobile services immediately after acquisition of the mobile device. The device management information system also improves the interoperability of the Nokia devices making them a universal and widely applicable brand. At the same time, the OMA device management Information system helps in the personalization of devices. Nokia works with some organizations that want their communication devices personalized hence the OMA device management information system helps in the same.
The other type of management information system used by the Nokia Corporation is mainly used in the data management department. The SyncML management information systems mainly helps in data synchronization and helps the management to monitor the data roaming and data circulation on the company’s devices. The synchronization of devices can be through cables, Bluetooth, and the internet (Bélanger 1017). Through the SyncML management information system, the company secures data in order to prevent unnecessary synchronizations. Some of the devices that users may intend to synchronize Nokia data on do not effectively combine well with Nokia devices and would aid breach of major data security in the company. Through the SyncML management information system, the management of the company protects its data so that the exchanges do not lead in breach of the data and synchronization can only occur to the recommended devices.
The synchronization management information system also helps in the profiling of the management information, which aids the positivity in user management by the company. The Open Alliance network is part of the synchronization management information systems that help in profiling the users and enabling user recognitions. Through the profiling activities, Nokia Corporation knows the people using their data throughout the earth and easily identifies the parameters around their data circulation worldwide. This greatly helps the company in keeping the security of the data applied on the Nokia devices and helping users develop highly personalized features while the management can make strategic decisions basing on such operations.
The client management information systems have helped Nokia Corporation in a number of ways. Initially, the management information systems have helped in the security of the data belonging to the company. Through the management information systems, the company can monitor the circulation of company data through the synchronizations and determine the level of data that can be synchronized on devices. This is imperative in data management and data protection, which helps in ensuring that the company data is not duplicated hence maintaining the company brand. Apart from protection of the data in the company, the management information systems in Nokia Corporation help in the monitoring of market trends and market development strategies. Through the VPN management information systems, the company can monitor the trends among the clients and companies, which are in business with Nokia Corporation. In the same sense, the company can monitor the market development and know the markets that need new data. This helps the company in maintenance of the customer base as well as penetration of new markets.
The management information systems help by easing and fastening decision making in the organization. Nokia Corporation is a global firm with many employees and many management parties that need to be consulted when decisions are made. Unfortunately, the management parties reside in different parts of the world making it increasingly hard to consult with each other. However, through the ACM-MIS Lite management information systems, the company can integrate information from different regions and detect changes in those regions, which will help in the decision making process. The management information systems thus help a great deal in decision making in the Nokia Corporation.
Despite the system helping the company in its growth, it has a number of shortcomings. The system does not have any segment to incorporate the views of customers in the decision making process. The management information system tracked client activities, ACM-MIS Lite, and monitored the interaction of clients with products from the company, but failed to provide a feedback mechanism. The interviewees claimed that some of the decision points may not be the best for the market but the fact that the clients attempted them and the company views them as profitability points makes them override the best actions.
The systems also lack personal appeal to customers. The human feel in the management information systems at the Nokia Corporation totally miss. Most of the customers are intrigued and driven by systems that incorporate their thoughts, feelings and flexibility features. Most of the systems are computer driven, with the management relying mostly on the feedback from the computers in order to know the reaction and interaction rates by the clients. ACM-MIS Lite management information system is designed to integrate data from the response systems, which also lack the personal appeal to the customers (Bélanger 1022). When the customers have questions and ideas that can make the product bigger and more reliable, the lack a platform to present them hence their belief in the product may drop hugely.
The hardware used at the Nokia Corporation is a development of the company’s internal systems derived from the application and use of the mobile technology in the company. The company manufactures its own hardware materials used in the mobile and communication devices while a few of the components of the management information systems are acquired. The software used at the Nokia Corporation is largely acquired from the Microsoft Corporation, one of the clients that work closely with the Nokia Corporation. This mainly involves the operating systems, the windows, and computer software. The telecommunication system comprises of security cameras, the mobile communication devices and videoconferencing tools, which are largely manufactured within the company. The hardware and software are also linked to the ACM-MIS Lite management information system for monitoring purposes.
The management information system was developed by the Association of Computer Machinery (ACM), which is considered the leader in development of computer machinery in the world. The development of the system mainly encompassed the customization of all the devices and machinery in the company to ensure that they all provide information to the server that permits decision making in the company. The Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) made the management information system such that it would accept information from all the clients and customers that the business believed would help in market attainment and retention.
The system helps the company to achieve a competitive advantage in the market in that through the system, the company can monitor the market trends and change effectively to match their competitors (Scifleet 44). Through the system, the efficiency levels in the company are also high, which makes it increasingly efficient to manage change and revolutionary ideas in the market. Through the system, the company can also know the areas where there are high sales of their products and the strategies they should use to retain the market. The company also identifies the areas with low sales and develops strategies to penetrate such markets.
The system is mainly used in decision making and adjustment functions in the company. The system provides information to the management and governing of the company, which greatly helps in decision-making and strategic planning in the company (Scifleet 19). The system also helps in integrating the market trends in the plans and decisions of the company. The company can monitor the data synchronization on their devices through the system. The system also helps the company in knowing the areas where the company data and devices are used hence the company can monitor the sales of their devices.
When compared to the systems in the text, most of the management information systems are host systems dealing with data hosting and data transfer to the different server ends. The management information systems and the Nokia Corporation also encompass numerous data hosting and data roaming services that aid the efficient transfer of data from one point of sales to another.
The Association of Computer Machinery (ACM) developed Nokia corporation management information systems. The management information system, known as ACM-MIS Lite, operates with integrated data from the client operations to the movement of the company devices in the market. The server encompasses IP VPN servers and SSL VPN servers. However, the system does not consider human appeal to customers and the inclusion of market ideas in the decision making process.
