Introduction
Throughout my education, I have noticed that writing has become my passion. Books developed my desire for analysis, discussion and collision of arguments. However, the difficulty to shape my thoughts and reflections lead me to enroll in a rhetoric course. This course offers learning of the skills to analyze and find the gist of the read material. Apart for that, the rhetoric course increases the level of vocabulary, structured writing, and usage of proper citation.
One of the most difficult things is defining and structuring the paper. There are so many ideas, and I find it difficult to separate them and write about one idea per paragraph. I expect that after finishing this course, I will be able to spate ideas and develop them into meaningful paragraphs. In addition to this, I am also interested in technical details of every paper including the proper thesis sentences, and the fluctuation of this thesis through the paper. Along with thesis statement, the opening sentences are as much important. Even though I am aware of some of these rules, it seems that in practice, they are not followed. My expectations from a rhetoric course include defining thesis statement and following this thesis throughout the paper.
Citations and argument proposal appear to be important part of every paper. However, many people find it difficult to use proper in-text citations and paraphrasing so their work is left ungraded. I hope to learn how to use citations more effectively and learn different styles of citation and quotation. There is always the issue of finding the most appropriate citation, and this is also one of the skills that I hope to acquire. In addition to this, I expect to develop arguments that reflect my ideas of texts that are analyzed in class. The texts that will be used should be from different areas motivating students to ask questions and develop a meaningful discussion.
Having all of the above on mind, I expect to develop a proficient level of vocabulary that will be useful in not only creative writing but further in my education. A good literacy means being one step closer to academic writing and better understanding of text. This also includes coherent writing and idea brainstorming. I hope that this course will open the door into the world of new words that are less frequently used in everyday speaking. This course will present a valuable thesaurus of words that will help me to express my argument more precisely. Even though, the sentence structure seems easy in English language, it may be difficult to write something without using too many words and creating very long sentences. I hope that a rhetoric course will help me to write sentences that have good structure, and are simple for understanding at the same time.
Writing is a long process that may seem easy at the beginning. However, there are many aspects that have to be considered before the writing takes place: the proper understanding of text, good thesis statement, arguments for or against, the careful choice of vocabulary and proper sentence structure. These are some of the things that I expect to learn, and use effectively in the rhetoric course. Finally, I expect to spend a good time with my peers as we present our opinions and arguments, and to help each other with creative advices and suggestions.
