Philosophy has always been an attractive field since it involves a major history of evolution and development. Philosophy derived from the human need to explore the mystery of human life and existence along with the wish to find the principles and rules that can be applied to life. Philosophical points of views and philosophers are studied and used by humans as part of their effort to put their lives within a normal routine and a desirable orientation. There is no doubt that life could be characterized as an ongoing, constant journey that aims at finding the meaning in life and at fulfilling one’s goals. This paper aims at presenting you with my personal philosophical points of view and the way in which these philosophical suppositions have been applied to my life. This paper will highlight the way in which these philosophical suppositions have proven either to be of some utility and validity in my life or the way in which they have proven to have fallen short of my personal expectations and needs. The three major fields that will be presented in this paper as far as my basic philosophical points of view are concerned are the field of religion, the field of interpersonal human relationships and the field of professional competition and success.
Having grown up in a religious family environment I found myself involved in the religious mentality created by the principles of a specific and strictly defined religious system. Therefore, most of my childhood was dominated by the religious beliefs of the hell waiting for me after death and the ethical distinction of actions in right and wrong. My personal quest of what life is meant to be and how life was created could not easily be restricted in the frame of a religious system. The religious myth of how people were created seemed too naïve to me but on the other hand it was too difficult to stand up for any kind of a different opinion in my family catholic environment. So, I spent my years in trying to find what interpretation of life’s existence talked most to my soul. I went through the studying of numerous religious systems and philosophical opinions and theories. The philosophical point of view that was reached on my behalf as part of this personal quest was the philosophical theory of nihilism, mainly connected with th name of Friedrich Nietzsche. According to nihilism, nihilists discover that all values are baseless and that reason is impotent. Nietzsche himself has written in his “Will to Power” that ‘Every belief, every considering something true is necessarily false because there is simply no true world’ (Friedrich Nietzsche, Will to Power, notes from 1883-1888). As a result, I found myself finding no meaning in anything and believing that my world is nothing and nothing exists after death. I remember myself entering the world of ‘I care for nothing’ because nothing really exists unless I give it the quality of existence. I turned out to be a silent child and adolescent who seemed to find no interest in anything at all. Life seemed an endless boredom and a journey of no scope and destination. But this philosophical supposition did not last for so long after all. Life surprised me by proving that nihilism was not what expressed my inner world and character. The sudden death of a very close family person due to a car accident was the button that reset everything inside me. The grief that flooded my soul along with the rage for this unfair event came to haunt my everyday life. I found myself to seek for comfort and try to find a belief that can persuade me on my beloved person being well. Once more, I went through all kinds of religions trying to find for a sign that could speak to me. My wandering the numerous religions and their philosophical base ended in my resulting in the philosophical belief and mentality represented by Christianity. Ii could be argued that the basic principles of Christianity were partially adjusted to my beliefs and individual mentality. I realized that I did not care and I do not care so much about the place where humans are supposed to go after their death. Whether one visits the hell or the paradise leaves me uninterested and totally careless. The most important philosophical point of view of Christianity is mutual love and this is my philosophical religious supposition. I believe in the importance of love and I strongly believe that if you learn to love and respect people then death does not take them away. I have developed strong belief in the existence of soul and its eternal spirit.
The second field which you will be presented with is the field of interpersonal relationships. There has been a philosophical supposition that has dominated my life as far as the human relationships are concerned. The first time I came in touch with the Ancient Greek philosophy was the time I found myself lucky enough to get to know the philosophical beliefs of Plato, the Ancient Greek philosopher who devoted himself to exploring basic aspects of human life in both the field of interpersonal relationships and in the field of their social role and life.
In one of his works, Plato explores the nature of violence against parents and older members of one’s family. There has never been the slightest moment of dispute or doubt on my behalf towards Plato’s philosophical theory. Plato has built a very strict and severe frame within which all those who perform violent behavior towards their parents or older members of their social circle and life, ought to be sentenced to death. In addition, Plato has built a very strict frame within which people are asked to be responsible for their actions and choices. As a result, if a citizen of Ancient Athens chooses to hang out with another citizen who has experienced a violent behavior, then this citizen ought to be severely punished as well. The punishment according to Plato ought to be such so that citizens are evicted and thrown out of their city as outcasts and are sentenced to death in case they decide to return to their homeland. Last but not least, Plato emphasizes on the punishment of citizens and their being forbidden to enter the temples and the religious places of honoring their Gods.
My personal philosophical supposition as far as domestic violence is concerned has always been the same ever since I read Plato’s point of view. Although I find myself to be a calm person who is against sever punishments, I strongly believe in the responsibility of people’s actions and choices. People are not ignorant and are not justified to be ignorant of their actions and behavior. Especially nowadays people live in the era of being rapidly informed on any kind of event and incident. Therefore, since people become familiar with the ethical principles and dilemmas, it is not justified for them to act wrongly out of ignorance or lack of being appropriately informed. This is why I have always believed that people are expected to be brought up in such a way that they are fully aware of their obligations within their family and social environment in terms of performing mutual respect and working for the establishment of respectful, sincere relationships.
The last field you will be presented here in this paper, in which philosophy has affected my behavior is the one of the professional evolution and carreer. Philosophical aspects have emphasized on the responsibility of people to act as energetic members of a social group who have decided to work for the common wealth. It has always been my personal belief that there can be no individual welfare unless the common welfare is also serviced. This is why I have always been an aspiring person who has been dreaming of a well-built professional life that will offer its own unique contribution to what people have resulted in calling the social building.
I have always believed that the most crucial criteria upon which one’s profession ought to be chosen is the feeling of personal and ethical satisfaction. Unless one’s profession is not chosen based on the felling of self-fulfillment then no social and professional role can be experienced.
