As demonstrated in the book Flipped by Van Draanen, there are many life changing events that affect the daily life of a person. For example, on a person level, there are many encounters that alter the daily course of my life. One instance is moving up in school or moving to a new neighborhood. These experiences are life changing because a person is taken away from his comfort zone and is challenged to socialize with new people. In the novel, for example, Bryce’s family moved to Juli’s block, immediately it is inferred that the family needs especially Bryce will meet new people. Juli shows interest in Byrce, but the feeling is not reciprocated.
Throughout the novel, the diverse view of the two characters regarding their relationships is explored. Juli was excited when she learned that there is a new family moving into her block and that the son was her age. When she finally met the family, she was immediately infatuated with Bryce. However, Bryce is an introvert and does not return her enthusiasm. At the end of the novel, the characters ‘flipped’ position when Bryce finally noticed the value of Juli he was determined to win her back.
Maturity is the main result of experience. As seen in the novel, every encounter in their day to day lives the characters they mature. For example, the realization of Bryce that his world is not confined in his safe zone and that he must be willing to take risks. He fell in love with the outgoing of Juli which he did not see during the beginning of the novel. The greatest take away people can learn from the novel is that experience changes people. No matter how small or big the experience is, it changes people.
Change is seen on a daily basis. As the novel showed, no one remains constant. Even if the experience is negative, what is important is that the characters learn from those experiences and build on them to become better versions of themselves. It is difficult to accept change at times, because some people are not emotionally and mentally strong to take on a life-changing event. Moving to another city, maybe a small life change, but its impact is tremendous to a person.
There is a lot of adjustment that must be made. Juli, in the beginning of the novel allowed her heart to rule her head. She did not care if Bryce is not interested in her, she just to grow closer to her. Bryce, on the other hand, had not noticed the efforts Juli put in just to be friends with him. He spent the majority of time trying to avoid Juli. He showed a passive-aggressive behavior in terms of trying to get rid of Juli’s persistence. When Juli started realizing that efforts were all in vain, she moved on from Bryce. The sequence of events based on the novel is relatable to anyone; there are people we appreciate when they start creating distance. Bryce only saw the value of Juli when she was no longer interested in him.
In conclusion, the novel is a good read, especially in providing people with life learnings about change and acceptance. Change is not always positive, but it is inevitable. There are a lot of encounters that will define the life of a person and no one can truly predict what will happen next. Bryce and Juli portrayed the stage of life wherein people are looking for who they truly are. They were young adults in search of their true identity in the world. It was a scary phase, but they managed to survive the phase.
