The two articles bring into perspective how the economic position of the United States of America has affected promptly the welfare of workers in the American job market. The question of whether the American Dream is attainable or it is just a perception that most people have in their mind. It is in this regard that the American economy has deteriorated over the years and has emerged to level disappointments among the citizens and migrants who aimed at making it in the country. Income inequality is one of the vices affecting the American economy, leaving the country that was well known as the land of opportunity becoming a land of struggles and disappointments. Canada, France, and Germany has emerged to have a greater economic mobility over the superpower that had developed immensely.
The two articles expound on the fact that the United States of America has become a land where there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor, and the cost of living has grown significantly over the years. It is indicated in the articles that a child born in America has a determined future, where the socio economic status of the child is partially defined at birth. This is in the sense that the children born in middle class households have equal opportunities of making it in life as opposed to those from the low income households and the high income households. Both Haskins and Swahili’s article as well as Olsons et al’s article are on the bounds of providing solutions towards creating an equal opportunity for the American child so that when they grow up and get into employment and the age of the majority, they can have equal opportunities of making it in life as well as have a higher chance of living the American dream that was in the yester years.
It is incorporated that the American dream is achievable for the population that “Play by the rules” in the land of numerous opportunities. The rules set on the table by these technocrats provide that there is a certain way of living the life in the United States of America, where the set rules range in a consecutive manner that is inevitable for those who want their children to have a better life in the future. The set rules that are to be put into play by today’s parents follow each other in the following manner; education is the first rule that has to be effected by the parents of the children. The second rule is prescribed as employment, where the child who has completed education up to the level of higher education is expected to gain employment that is sustainable. The third rule that is to be effected is marriage; where after employment one looks for a partner to settle with in marriage. The fourth and last rule is parenthood, where after marriage the couple gets a child or children and they become parents, and the cycle starts all over again for the born children. It is in this cycle that the American dream is realized.
The federal government has invested a lot of money ranging in billions of dollars, which has been invested to carry out social programs of domestic causes so as to improve the livelihood of the low class and middle class who constitute approximately 90 percent of the United State of America’s population. Despite the fact that so much money has been invested into various programs, they have all proved to be ineffective as no significant change has been realized or felt by the American population. The reason for this ineffectiveness as elaborated in the two articles is for the fact that most of the programs initiated by the relevant bodies tasked with the project have been targeted on wrong groups of the population within America. The social programs can be effected by considering various factors such as; personal responsibility, political sustainability, simplicity, and cost- effectiveness.
The proposal put forward by Haskins and Sawhill laid forward a proposal that the American congress set aside 500 million dollars every year to be dedicated towards a campaign on social marketing, which involves the four steps aforementioned. This suggestion by Haskins and Sawhill disappoints with its strategies as it proposes that cost- effectiveness, political stability, simplicity, and research base be put into consideration for effectiveness of the social policies. This is a very daunting task as these measures cannot be pin- pointed nor determined in totality as they are common issues that vary across the board. This does not really paint the picture as it is supposed to be, since it generally proposes a shift of focus by the government towards the young population of the country where more funds and energy should be channeled to. This is more likely to face a gruesome political opposition as the congress, the senate, and the general federal government is composed majorly of the elderly. It is in this perspective that the two articles may not be as effective although it brings to light the numerous issues affecting the American economy.
