The object that I chose to observe is the head of Athena. Athena was one of the Greek goddess. Athena was a goddess of courage, wisdom, inspiration and civilization. The Head of Athena belong to a large statue. However, only the head remains. The front part was damaged that necessitated repairing it. However, the nose is still missing. The information board in front of the statue indicates that the curving may have been sculpted in City of Pergamon which was a wealth city based on the technical details and stylistic details. The object caught my eye because of the beauty of the curving. It is a white stone with very precise details and almost real life dimensions. I was also interested in knowing why the body was missing since it was only a head and why the nose was also missing from the sculpture.
The Greek gods have been mentioned on various occasions in Illaid Book 9. Athena has been mentioned twice. In one instance Odysseus talks about Athena in a conversation with Achilles. Odysseus reminds him that Agamemnom once said it the decision of Athena and Hera to give power to the person they wish. Therefore, we can infer that Athena was a goddess of power. Athena gave people power. Achilles also talks about Athena in a response to Odysseus. Achilles says that “I’ll never take as wife any daughter of Agamemnom, son of Atreus, not even ifher skill in crafts equal the bright Eyed-Athena” From this reference we can identify the attributes of Athena. We can infer that Athena was highly skilled in craft. We can also infer that Athena was bright eyed. From the text, those are the only qualities of Athena that can be derived.
