Over the years, FedEx has been one of the leading courier and services in the United States of America and around the world. FedEx enjoys massive and huge customer base around the globe because it has been efficient in deliveries where it delivers huge parcels by road and in good time and shape. As the old adage goes, that change is the only constant aspect in the new human life, so has FedEx been exposed to adjustments. In the recent past, there has been push and pull in the in the customs delivery business with companies and related firms embracing the aspects and advancements of information technology to make the transportation of parcels efficient, effective, interesting and pocket friendly on the concerned companies. A precise example of a company or firm that has caused ripples in the industry is amazon, with its indication that it would employ drones to supply and deliver small parcels and cargoes. In order to remain relevant, all the other relevant and related companies and firm such as FedEx have been obliged to act. In order to make profits and remain relevant in this line of business, FedEx has taken some bold steps and measures to embrace the technological competition as presented by amazon. For the purpose of this essay, I will discuss in principle and details, the measures that FedEx is contemplating to pursue to match the digital competition as presented by amazon and other firm as well as remain technologically relevant and robust in the world of technology (Mirchandani, 2012, p. 22).
Secondly, drones require less manpower to operate: and therefore less units of labour can be used to supply and deliver a considerable or relatively big amount of good and parcels. Efficiency ion the business sense would mean that there would be reduced amount of labour, and an equal reduction in the cost of hiring labour. This logic translates to the fact that, FedEx as a profit making company would lessen its operational cost, and hence maximise on the overall returns. Therefore in the long run, the company would reduce the manpower, in terms of the actual people who deliver the parcels, the drivers of the delivery trucks amongst many others. I suppose that by reducing the operational cost, in terms of reducing the amount of money that it uses to hire and pay the servicemen, would increase the assets asset base and portfolio for the company. In principle, it implies that it would be more economically efficient for the business to employ drones as compared to employing people, thus, more money for the company FedEx. Closely tied to this, is the fact that FedEx has in the past used heavy airliners which are relatively expensive in terms of maintenance and operations. The heavy or large airliners, deliver large parcels of o varied destinations. By contemplating the venture of drones, FedEx, would also reduce the financial stress of transporting the parcels which makes the operational cost of the company to be high.
Time and speed of delivery is another aspect that cannot escape attention while discussing the efficiency of FedEx pursuing drone-delivery. It is needless to mention that drones are faster than the delivery trucks or the manual door-to-door operational mode that has been used by FedEx to deliver and supply goods and services. It would take a few minutes for the drones to traverse larger geographical distance, and at a faster speed that a delivery truck and a delivery man would do while delivering the same parcels or goods. Time and speed of delivery, is an obvious aspect of efficiency that the customers and the clients look for in the delivery business. In the current day and age, once a person shopped or shops for a good online, it would take a longer period of time to have the actual good delivered to them in their doorsteps. This time and speed of the delivery would depend on the actual geographical location and distance of the person, from the delivery points or the collection points.
The further a person’s location and geographical distance is the longer the amount of time it would take for the good to reach the customer. Once the drones are operational, the time lapses wasted during transit of the goods would be eliminated or greatly reduced all the same. Conclusively, it is would be efficient to on the part FedEx, to minimise the waiting time of the customers by employing technology of the nature of drone. A drone would fly faster, thus reduce the waiting period (Tien, 2012, p. 18)
Conclusion
In the above essay, I have discussed and discussed the basics in terms of efficiency of the possible employment of drone technology by FedEx as a delivery company. At the top of the list of benefits that the company would mean that the company would ensure that the welfare of the customers is maximised. This translates to the fact that it would be easier for the company to deliver goods in good time and at a relatively faster pace than it would do using the conventional and manual way. For instance, if a customer wishes to replace a faulty bulb at night, then it would take a considerably shorter time for the bulb to reach the house of the customer. This means that the person can stay in the comfort of his or her room and wait for the bulb to arrive because it would reach in good time. This is an improved state of welfare, better than it is when the customer would be forced to visit the nearest shop, or order for a bulb online, and waits for the next day or longer period of time to have the same delivered to him. It would be efficient in terms of saving of time of the customer and cost for the company, FedEx.
