Analysis & Findings
The case studies have the guts and ability to apply the things in an effective manner particularly. The case revolves around two individuals which are Alex and Stephanie. Both of the individuals work in two different companies in particular. It is required to apply two different motivational theories and two leadership theories on the case accordingly. Simultaneously, the application of leadership and motivation are essential for the organizations particularly. The application would have been depend upon the effectiveness in particular. The scenario will be defined in the next section, which will be the motivation.
Motivational Theories Application on the Case
Motivation is a strategy cum behavior that associated with an organization and their employees in which they acquired about their effectiveness particularly (Chelladurai & Madella, 2006). Motivation is known as a driving force that associated with an organization as far as enhancing the employability of an organization in an effective manner. Without motivation no organization can enhance their productivity and the level of satisfaction among their employees. In fact, motivation is the only thing which works like a bridging factor among the employees and the management, and those organizations which have a great effectiveness towards the analysis then it would be more effective.
Motivational factor is an important factor that enhances the level of satisfaction among the employees as far as achieving the effectiveness is concerned. There are two important kinds of motivation and motivational factor known as Intrinsic Motivation and Extrinsic Motivation (Chelladurai & Madella, 2006). Intrinsic Motivation is a type or branch of motivation through which the workability and level of satisfaction among the employees would have been increased with the help of intrinsic motivational factors which will enhance their inner feelings and satisfaction level. Such intrinsic factors known as appreciation and positive feedbacks through which the organizations can enhance the level of inner satisfaction level of the employees. On the other hand, the motivational factor that specifically associated with the bonus, perks and high remuneration is known as Extrinsic Motivational Factors. Both of these motivational factors are essential for an organization as far as enhancing the workability of the employees is concerned. Both of these motivational factors are also essential in terms of enhancing the level of productivity of the organizations particularly. In this case study, it can be clearly seen that Stephanie is motivated particularly through inner satisfaction level like appreciation and changing of job routine to not to get the employees bored. On the other hand, the intrinsic motivational factor of Alex is very low, because Dan the boss of Alex has a harsh behavior with their employees, and supposes their employees as a machine. There are two motivational theories that needed to be analyzed accordingly, and the theories are Herzberg Motivational Theory and Maslow Motivational Theory.
Herzberg Motivational Theory
The theory of Herzberg specifically associated with the type of motivation in which there are two different factors. Herzberg theory also known as a two way theory in which the management and employees are required to be responsive to each other for their betterment and effectiveness, therefore it is essential for the employees to attain effectiveness accordingly
In this particular case of leadership, it can be said that Herzberg Motivational Theory can be essential for the perfection. In this particular view, it can be said that the company of Stephanie has utilized and implemented this particular theory on their organization; however there is no association of Herzberg theory on the organizational behavior of Alex. The level of interaction and communication of the Stephanie’s manager (Jonathan) with its employees is perfect, and the manager always communicate the supermarket’s value and effectiveness with their employees, and always change the position of their employees accordingly to make the effective in the long term, and train them to have the effectiveness in the supermarket accordingly (Chelladurai & Madella, 2006). The Herzberg theory can be extremely essential for the companies to enhance the level of motivation among the employees by enhancing the level of communication with them and by providing them the chance to deliver the best services in town. The next theory that can be effective for the scenario which is should be implemented is Maslow theory of Motivation.
Maslow’s Motivational Theory
Maslow motivational theory is an important theory of management that used specifically for the enhancement of motivation among the employees to increase their level of satisfaction accordingly. Maslow motivational theory has five corners, and all the corners should be complied by the employees in order to get a certain achievement in life. According to the Maslow theory, an employee cannot leap over the second step without fulfilling and complying the last step appropriately. The first step is Need, in which the basic need of the employees should be food, shelter and clothes. In this particular case of leadership of supermarkets in which Alex and Stephanie are working accordingly, this particular point does not exist because both of the individuals are getting sufficient amount of money for their work from which they can fulfill their basic appetite in an organized fashion and manner. The second step is psychological need in which the employees would be fulfill their appetite by fulfilling the basic psychological needs of their self. From the case, it is evaluated that the psychological need of Stephanie has been fulfilled because her manager allows them to work on different position with a variety in their work and services, while the same aspect is not effective for Alex, because Dan (the manager) of the company doesn’t allow their employees to change their position (Waldrop, 2008).
If this case would be defined so long in the analysis, then it can be said that Stephanie can move on the third level of the Maslow Motivational need, while Alex will be retaining on the same position for a certain time period, which will not be an attractive factor for Alex in future, however it would be productive and effective for Stephanie and their organization particularly.
Leadership Theories & Implementation
The essence of leadership is extremely important for the sake of an organization, and it usually depends upon the management of the employees in an effective and dominating manner. In this particular section, it is required to have two different leadership techniques particularly for the implementation on the case. The two leadership theories which have been selected in this particular analysis are Transformational Leadership Theory and Transitional Leadership Style. Both of these theories can be referred as transformational and transitional leadership styles particularly, and both of these theories can be applied over the scenario discussed in the paper.
Transformational Leadership
Transformational Leadership is the part or branch of leadership in which the leaders have the tendency to enhance its productivity by giving the employees everything which they want. The leaders having such instinct in their minds are the one who can motivate their employees in a better manner, and for a long span of time. Transformational Leadership also known as Theory X manager, and the theory accounts for a good behavior of the company with their employees (Waldrop, 2008)
Such employees feel that the management of the company is very kind with them, and resultantly they will increase their effectiveness in a perfect manner. Satisfaction is the main thing that made the employees productive and effective for a company in an effective manner. It is important for the leaders to provide all the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational section and things which are important for their future concerns. In the case study scenario of leadership, it is evaluated that the manager of Stephanie was extremely effective, and they think that the employees should move their position for their betterment in the future, and they often do it with their employees. This is the main thing why Stephanie seems more productive and confident as well as satisfied than that of other person (ALEX) defined in the case study.
Transitional Leadership
The other type of leadership known as Transitional Leadership, and the theory of transitional leadership is totally changed with the transformational leadership. In this aspect, the managers are in the fact of having coercive behavior with the employees to make them productive for the company. Transitional Leadership is all about providing influential behavior and strictness to the employees of the company. Such leaders also known as Theory Y manager, who thinks that employees don’t want to work anymore and they need strict and coercive behavior for the work, otherwise they will create problem for the company.
According to the case scenario, the leadership behavior of Dan, the manager of Alex is totally related to this theory or leadership style, in which Dan influence its every employee and being rude with them every time. Due to this particular fact, Dan looks unproductive and unsatisfied with the policies of the company, as well as with the behavior of their leaders. Dan is one of those individuals who think that rotation of job doesn’t work for the company, and employees should be used on a specific project to make them master of the same. However, the idea is totally wrong for Alex, as he was not among those individuals who would stick to a single job for a long span of time.
Conclusion
The field of management sciences has been increasing heavily from last ten years, and it grabbed a real pace after the current economic crisis. The leadership and management behavior are essential for the productivity and efficacy of an organization, and it is equally beneficial in the managerial behavior for the companies mentioned in the attached case. The case has two different individuals, Alex and Stephanie working in two different supermarkets and managers. The analysis divulged that the management of Stephanie has a great behavior with their employees to make them satisfy unlikely the behavior of Alex, who didn’t make thinks effective for them.
