Good Learning From Failure Essay Example

Failing never feels good when it happens initially. No one enters into a commitment with an intention to fail. Most people pursue a goal with the expectation to succeed. Unfortunately, failure is a phenomenon that cannot be avoided. Rather than perceiving failure as a negative event or incident, there is something quite valuable to learn when one fails. Without failure growth would be limited. I have heard many times throughout life that “we learn from our failures.” When I was younger I did not understand this concept, and even as I matured this idea did not sound appealing. However, as I ponder this concept of learning from my failures I can bear witness to the fact that I have learned the most important lessons as a result of failure.
One of the most important events in my life happened as a result of a situation that I regretted immensely. I was visiting with family and as I was saying good-bye to one of my favorite aunt’s I withheld my true sentiment towards her. I adored her and she was the biggest role model in my life. I never told her how important she was to me, and I even remained emotionless as I said good bye because I was afraid of appearing weak in front of her. Unfortunately, just one month after my visit she was in a horrible car accident and I never got a chance to let her know how much I admired her. Three weeks after her car accident, she died and I lived with this sense of failure for many years. I failed in expressing my sentiment and felt a tremendous amount of regret. She never knew how much she influenced me and the positive role she played in my life.
I was just a kid when this happened and it hurt for a long time. Being so young I did not know how to manage the feelings it brought out in me. As I became a young adult and started to mature I was able to understand some valuable lessons from that sad event. I realized that being prideful in situations where I should be vulnerable was a mistake. No matter how uncomfortable it was to express myself, I needed people in my life to know how much I loved them. From that point on I started to recognize the importance of expressing myself with the important people in my life. When my grandfather got old and became ill I did not let my pride get in the way. Instead, I was able to fully express my appreciation and love for him while he was still alive. When he passed I was at peace in my relationship with him. I was grateful to have learned such an important life lesson.
Although I failed at my relationship with my aunt, I also learned a crucial life lesson at a young age. I was too immature to understand myself and the world when she passed away, but what I learned from that sad situation is something that has changed my relationships in life forever. Now that I am aware of myself and the world, I am always grateful for the people I love and also expressing my feelings for them. I never want to have another person I my life disappear without them knowing what they mean to me. I still have regret for my aunt dying without knowing how much she positively affected my life. Fortunately that moment of failure has allowed me to be aware of the bigger picture and never let another important person walk away without sharing how important they are to me.
