When I decided to pursue my dreams in the United States and live the comfort of my home in Hong Kong, I knew culturally speaking it will not be an easy journey for me. But, with my dreams as my main fuel, I packed my bags and hopped on a plane bounded to the U.S. Like what I predicted the norms were very different than what we have in Asia, Western countries were more individualistic compared to the collective ideology of the Eastern culture. Communication was my main problem because I had to adjust to the language and in order for me to integrate myself in society I must literally know how to express myself. Luckily, with the help of other people I learned the basics and now I am eager to deepen my understanding of communication.
In the kind of world we have today, being fluent in various languages is no longer enough; a person must go beyond the façade of language and investigate the various channels in communicating. Being able to use innovative techniques to rely messages inspired me to pursue communication as my major. I chose to apply in your institution because as I was doing my research I saw the good reviews of the university and how it trains student into globally competitive and competent professionals.
I was inspired (and at the same time challenged) by how the media, for example, contributes a lot in shaping the landscape of society. Media is the number one communication channel in today’s world; a lot of people are relying on media for information, entertainment and socialization. I believe that the media’s true potential has yet to be touched and I want to venture on researches that can help harness the use of media. For example, I can use media to promote culture diversity. Based on my personal experience, cultural diversity is now rampant in every place due to globalization.
Communication is integrated in our daily lives. It has injected itself deep down into your lives that it has become a significant aspect of our very existence. I am hoping that I could get this chance to study my dream course. As a person who has a passion for talking, I think this profession suits both my personality and interest rather well. I see myself in the future positively contributing in the field of communication with the use of breakthroughs and innovation. I want to inspire others to believe that there is always room for improvement even in the field so popular as media.
It would mean a lot to me and my family if I get admitted in the university. What I can offer is my signature dedication towards learning. I know my bi-culture experience would also serve to my advantage because I can relate to other people well and easily. I am open to experiences and opinions because I see them as an opportunity for me to expand my expertise and knowledge. I want to work with people who share the same level of passion towards communication. In class, I will actively participate in discussions in order for me to gage myself. In the future, when I become successful I want to return to Hong Kong and help people develop a love for communication so that it will also open a lot of opportunity for them.
