Rashomon is a movie that marks best manifestations of the world intellectual history. It was directed more than 60 years ago, but still remains well timed. Rashomon questions individual perception of four important human concepts: truth, fact, reality, and objectivity. According to the dictionary, “truth” is something corresponding to reality, “fact” is an occurrence that really happened, “reality” is a social realm, something people really see, and “objectivity” means equity and lack of prejudice. Rashomon concentrates on the story of the samurai who was killed, and his wife who was raped by the bandit; however, the real killer of the samurai remains uncertain. The movie tells us four different versions of real events, and each of the versions is told from the viewpoint of the teller. All of the stories are completely different from one another, and this is how the four concepts appear; every participant of the story protects him or herself and turns it to advantage, in doing so revealing his or her dark and bright sides. Rashomon has three main scenes: the Rashomon city gate, the court, and the forest. The action of the movie presents events to the viewer differently; distinction between perspectival (shot types) and presentational (camera movement and shot scale) style aspects allows to create various perspectives of the bandit, the wife, and the husband making them active or passive narrators and reflecting their role in narrative agency, while the woodcutter’s arc has both active and passive aspects and, in such a manner, creates an ambitious narration mode. At the end of the movie, the story told by the woodcutter is more believable, because he is just an outsider and does not have any personal interest in the result.
