Introduction
Amazon is the most important retail website in the occidental hemisphere and second in the world on the websites of the Alibaba Group. Amazon since 1995 has been an innovative company thanks to the entrepreneurship of Jeff Bezos since the foundation of the company. The first innovation was to offer music CD and books with an extensive catalog of more than one million titles with an affordable shipping cost. The company in all its life has increased its inventory in categories and items quantity.
The company, compared with Apple is not a pioneer in technology; but it is a good follower and adopts best the technology for its processes. The company is not a pioneer in electronic readers, but once Amazon understands the technology, it created the Kindle with the ability to read electronic books offered in the Amazon digital store. At this moment, Amazon starts diversifying from physical products to digital products. Amazon does not have the interest to sell the hardware to get revenue from those sales, but to fuel the sales of the digital content. That is the cause, why the Kindle products of Amazon (e-reader, Fire, and others) have lower prices than Apple and Samsung.
The mobile technology industry had a great evolution thanks to investments in research and development by hundreds of companies worldwide. The mobile technology has more relevance than the desktop computer industry; that is the reason why IBM and HP sold their desktop computer units in late 2000. The mobile technology ecosystem is the most important revenue drivers of the most important electronic manufacturers in the world. Smartphones, Music Players, Cameras, Tablets, and Laptops; different to a computer desktop has a lifecycle of fewer than three years. That represents a higher speed in depreciation and an increase sales force to the electronic designers and manufacturers.
Current life cycle stage of mobile technology:
The mobile technology is in an advanced time of the growth stage of the life cycle. It is necessary to remember that the mobile technology has more than 30 years if we consider the mobile technology since the cell phone launch in late 1980's. It is not possible to consider that the mobile technology is in the maturity stage because every year there is innovations that reinvent the technology increasing the number of products and sales. Every time new companies offer innovative mobile products. South East Asia companies as Samsung, LG, Huawei and Sony offer new mobile technologies at the same time American manufacturers like Motorola, Blackberry, and Apple did the same. Amazon, the considered study case, without a manufacturing background but with an immense client database and a content catalog, developed from zero new mobile technology products adapted to its content. The Amazon strategy allows the company to apply economy scale to its technology products reducing its costs and final price, a cost that is paid by the offer of content to the clients using the platform of the mobile products.
Innovations in the mobile technology
Each year there are innovations in the mobile technology, but the concept that summarizes all the innovations in the mobile technology is the convergence. Since the first mobile phone in late 1980's, the mobile phone has adopted more functions that other gadgets offered individually, but the evolution mobile technologies made possible to have cameras with 4G and wireless connection, mobile phones with music players and cameras; laptops and tablets with communication facilities.
Amazon has innovated in different mobile technologies. The first innovation was the electronic ink reader and the kindle fire. Both products are complementary because the first product is conceived by the book readers and the second product for internet and applications users. Amazon, without previous experience in electronic manufacturing had the capacity to develop a product from zero offering it at an affordable price and adapted to the rest of the products of the company. After the tablet, Amazon created the Fire that is the mobile phone with Firefox operative system that has almost all the applications of the Kindle Fire inside a 5 inches phone. From last year (2016) Amazon is offering to the clients the Home Assistant Alexa that is a gadget that compliments the rest of the mobile technology components.
Conclusions
Amazon is an innovative company that started in 1994 as a CD and bookstore to a logistic company and today a content and technology developer. Amazon is a company that every time adapts every year, and it is an early adopter of the new technologies that has the potential to grow and to generate profits for the company. Amazon was not the first electronic commerce company, but it improved the logistic process. The company was not the first to create a tablet, but it adopted the technology to all the digital content of its catalog and today the company adopted the technology of home assistant, but with the advantage to adapt it to all the digital content available in the company. The capacity to adopt new technologies and adapt it to current processes is the key to success.
