I must say I took what we learned to be valuable, especially the Brain-Targeted Teaching Model and Tomlinson's article. As far as the Brain-Targeted Teaching Model is concerned, I remember how during the old days back in school, the evaluation was just an excuse to assign grades by giving us an exam. In fact, we never got any kind of feedback once we had given the teacher our assignment. We were just graded based on whether we did well or not.
When I was reading Chapter 9, I couldn't help but compare this with the Evaluation that I took during my time studying in my own country. It was then that I realized that an evaluation is not just a way to assign grades, but a tool to increase learning. Moreover, I learned that there are multiple kinds of assessments, nearly all of which I missed out on in my education. However, I know now that feedback should be provided in a timely manner so as to give students the opportunity to revisit or correct their answers. Also, I learned that the purpose of feedback is to help students arrive at the correct responses by themselves. Portfolio Assessments, Student Journals and Performance Assessment "Rubrics" are all designed to encourage creative thinking and improve expectations of performance. In this way, Tomlinson's article was inspirational for me. I liked how she tried to teach the curriculum that she first taught for general school in an inclusive classroom. In spite of the various problems she faced, she did it successfully. I now recognize that educational subjects should be designed to encourage students to become better learners.
Describe one class activity that has influenced your thinking or your work with students? I will answer this question by describing what I saw in this class, since I did not actually engage in the actual teaching field. The activity that most influenced me was the one where you had to place certain books on each table. I made sure to look at each book carefully. And when I did, I always managed to learn something new that I didn't know before. In this way, it was a magnificent activity. Besides, I also liked that every group came up with a subject that they eventually taught to us. For example, even though we were all asked to present the butterfly life cycle, each group, despite using the same materials, came up with a unique way of displaying the life cycle. In this way, every group presentation was different.
