A Place at the Table is a movie in which three different individuals from entirely different parts of the United States search for adequate nutrition, (“A Place at the Table,” 2013). This is a fascinating study of nutrition and culture within the United States because we do not have healthy food and we have one of the highest obesity rates in the world. The reason for this is our portions. Within the United States, the average plate is double the size of what you find in foreign countries. What happens as a result is that the average American ends up craving more food and then ends up eating the entire large portion and gaining weight. The other factor that is discussed in the film is the lack of availability of healthy food in general, (“A Place at the Table,” 2013). Thus, we have large portions with unhealthy food options. Additionally, the food that is healthy is more expensive than the less healthy food such as McDonald’s. This creates a major problem within the United States for consumers to be able to afford the food that is healthier for their bodies to consume.
This film reflects an issue that needs to be readily addressed in America. Given our high rate of diabetes and other disorders associated with being overweight, our problem lies in the lack of nutrition education provided to our citizens, (“A Place at the Table,” 2013). Having one health class in high school is not enough to encourage a lifetime of healthy heating. Additionally, if one grows up in a family where they have parents that are overweight, it is difficult to not learn by example. It is going to be through finding sustainable ways to produce healthier food at a lower cost and educating American citizens that we will be able to see a viable solution to the issues that were presented during the movie A Place at the Table.
