For a long time, I have wanted to watch “Precious”, and I finally did that. I did not expect that it would be so heartbreaking and abstruse. I did not expect that “Precious” would affect me so strongly. What I saw shocked me, and no other film has accurately managed to realize my idea of the cruelty of life.
The film impressed me because it was filmed sincerely, and the purpose of it was to show people what life can be and to evoke a response from viewers` hearts, protecting them from similar errors that could be made. Therefore, "Precious" won an Oscar. The film is violent, but at the same time, it is sympathetic. Sometimes I wanted to cry or click on the "stop" button, but I still had the patience to watch the film until the end.
A girl named Claireece “Precious” Jones was unlucky to be born into a dysfunctional family. Nobody loved her, and she was hated by everyone. Her mother constantly abused her (constantly, her mother Mary, was abusing her daughter physically and emotionally by calling her daughter names, and treating her like Claireece was completely subhuman, in every possible way). Mary was also taking advantage of her daughter, harming her dignity, and lastly, Mary was continually sending her daughter to get cash allowance that she would take away. Finally, her father raped her on a regular basis. Both her mother and father abused and neglected Claireece, but despite this, she grew up to become a kind-hearted person who knows how to love. We can say that she was born at the wrong time in the wrong place -- and not in the right family. But fate is bound to happen. Claireece became an example for people. I admire her strength of will and soul. Another person would have run away or committed suicide, but she did not give up. Her dreams were her only refuge when everything else around her was disappointing. She was treated like mud – but she was running away in a dream, where she could find her shelter.
Incest, being rather rare in comparison with other abuses, remains common in many parts of the country -- especially in economically-challenged families. In fact, in this film, not only a family drama is shown, but a drama of an individual is also depicted. We see how Claireece`s mother -- and later Claireece herself -- are ready to subject themselves to moral degradation only because of the fear of loneliness. A mother allows her husband to rape her child because she is afraid that he will leave. Where does such reasoning come from? I am confident that Mary, Claireece’s mother, lacked love as a child, just as much as Claireece Precious Jones is deprived of this feeling. Mary was humiliated and convinced that she is ugly and foolish, and an inferiority complex was impressed in her mind. Consequently, she thinks that she is unworthy of a normal man. Mary could not put up with the reality that her spouse (Claireece`s father) would leave her, and with only this reason in view, she allowed him to constantly sexually abuse her daughter. We may conclude that this was caused by Mary`s inferiority complex -- one that she may have grown up with herself.
The movie also shows a direct correlation between abuse and binge eating disorders. Although Claireece is aware of her problems with being overweight and her constant need to eat in excess, she can do nothing about this since this is the only possible way for her to overcome the burden of sexual abuse caused by her father. It is food for her that pacifies and brings her relief, helping her leave behind her parents` emotional and physical abuses. What is worse, her mother artificially addicted Claireece to unhealthy food as she considered Claireece`s excessive weight the guarantee that her daughter will be further ignored by other men and would remain under her influence. This behavior ensured that Carl (Claireece`s father) would not leave Mary. He would not leave her due to the reason that he wanted to continue his sexual abuse of her daughter. We may also assume that Claireece ate excessively with the purpose of preventing her father's sexual interest in her.
When I looked at the performance of Gabourey Sidibe (Claireece Precious Jones), I was totally convinced that the actress herself had once experienced a life like that – an unhappy family and an abnormal childhood – so believable to me was her performance. The heroine comes across as a person who preserved her self-esteem and inherent worth, no matter what. Under the conditions in which Claireece lived and grew up, her love for children makes quite an extraordinary impression.
In this movie, human characteristics are collected that can personally show us the worst side of human nature: hatred, lack of spirituality, cruelty, and anger. All of these negative emotions come from the closest people who supposedly love you and are distressed for you. Claireece sees from her mother only disgust towards her, feels her hatred and suffers beatings. Still, she could find compassion, understanding and love from others, completely strange other people -- who support and protect her, as well as appreciate and talk about her attractiveness. She is taught not to give up, she is inspired to gain self-confidence and she learns from such support, as it is as necessary to her as air. In turn, her gratitude is expressed by the willingness of Precious to leave her mother, fighting back to survive.
Undoubtedly, the film is difficult and in some way repellent. It is difficult to "digest", and accept the fact that this film is realistic -- like no other. We can only envy the spiritual power of the main hero, harness our willpower, and understand that life is wonderful. To me, the message of the film was to appreciate your life, whatever it may be, and go ahead there, where it should be better!
