The issue of choosing a profession arises at school, when a decision must be made about the faculty a person is going to study at. Undoubtedly, the choice is not easy as it defines one’s future life. In my opinion, school time is too early to make such an important decision, since not everybody sticks to their childhood dreams of becoming a doctor, a vet, a teacher, etc. Thus, they are forced to make a choice, sometime a blind one. Anyway, this is how it is done according to the current education system and we have to follow the rules.
Notwithstanding the profession one has chosen, there are countless opportunities to self-actualization in fields which differ drastically from the initial direction. For instance, people who studied to become teachers of foreign languages can apply their knowledge in tourism and work as tourist guides. Also, with a bit of effort and time spent on extra courses, they can become interpreters or translators. By contrast, there are cases when people opt for a completely different field such as setting up their own business, where they can pursue their hobby as a way to make money.
On the other hand, it is obvious that there are professions one cannot simply switch to. They are the ones which require special expertise in such fields as science, medicine, pedagogy, geology, information technologies, etc. In case we are dealing with a job which presupposes responsibility for human lives, the stakes are extremely high. Moreover, to become a respected specialist with a good reputation one must gain several years of experience, which is adding up to the difficulties of converting to this particular profession.
Thus, my current dream job is connected to something which is quite far from what I studied at university. If I could make another career, it would be the career of a neuroscientist. To my mind, a career in any science is incredibly challenging and requires a great deal of intellect, effort and time. But it is worth it! All the developments in technologies, medicine, etc. have been made by scientists who are pushing us further into the future of discoveries. Personally, I find it very exciting and inspirational that the world around us has been shaped by people like me. I don’t mean to say that they are ordinary people. On the contrary, they are very talented and intelligent, but they are humans like me.
A couple of years ago I started reading popular scientific books and became mesmerized with what I learned about a human brain. A British neurologist Oliver Sacks, a Dutch neurobiologist Dick Swaab, an American journalist Charles Duhigg – these are the people whose works opened the fascinating world of the human brain for me. From their books I learnt about the structure of the brain, various deviations in its work and the way people learn to live with them, hormones and what shapes our emotions and the feeling of love. It’s important to mention that the books were written in the period from the middle of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st. During that period there was a significant leap in technologies, which directly influenced the scientific progress. This is one of the reasons I would like to be a neuroscientist, as there are more and more opportunities for research in the field which, in turn, means the possibility of discoveries. It is extremely interesting to learn what parts of our brain are responsible for certain functions. With the invention of magnetic resonance imaging it has become an easy task! Also, situations when a person’s brain malfunctions provide opportunities of researching the conditions. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases have been the subject of research for many years and the developing technologies give us hope to find the cure.
