Writing is an experience that I have come to realize is vital to complete assignments. This experience also extends to the professional environment whereby in any career writing of reports and other tasks is also very important. The standards of writing in college are however higher than the previous learning stage-high school. My English classes provided me with the opportunity to be creative and enjoy writing for several assignments. However, in as much as writing is fun from where I can derive my strengths, there were also several challenges to which points to my weaknesses. My strength as a writer can be traced from my ability to discuss in detail and length about a given topic. I enjoy writing about creative topic that I can relate to on a personal level since I get to express myself. My greatest weakness as a writer is being redundant and repetitive on issues that I have already discussed. Furthermore, in writing essays, I find it difficult to develop a concluding paragraph that brings the paper into a full circle from the introduction.
Since my first semester of college, I have worked on several assignments that require different writing styles. These include writing essays, journal entries, compositions, presentations, term papers, summaries and answering questions. I had to direct my intelligence and skills to develop new and original tasks. I have gotten more experience in conducting research via the internet and reading books and citing the sources I used to construct my papers. The most difficult aspect of using sources was finding the same. This resulted from the fact that in the contemporary world, the internet is so popular making it difficult to go to the university or national library and find a book related to my topic of discussion. Furthermore, typing key words into the search engine at times brought results that are not related to what I intend to write about. The other issue on dealing with sources was my reference page. I had trouble with writing the different citation styles due to confusion which resulted to my making a lot of mistakes. Although I have received guidance from my teacher and colleagues, websites often do not list all the information needed for citations. But I am working hard to improve this difficulty.
My other are of difficulty was writing the rhetorical essay where the instructor’s comments were that I focus too much on the issue under discussion rather than my own opinion. I have made a vow to research more on rhetorical analysis essays until I get to write one of my own as per the required standards. I must mention that I get to understand an argumentative essay since I get to state my claims followed by supporting evidence. This enables my paper not to sound as an autobiography of the author’s work under discussion. I have issues with my grammar citing spelling mistakes and commas. I realized however that after writing, proof reading was necessary and there are many online sites that can help me perfect my grammar.
My college writing experience has been worth while to enable me communicate via writing. Despite the difficulties identified, I am confident that my writing will continue to improve. I had no expectations as I begun my writing experience but I am confident that with adequate practice, I will continue to improve my writing and learn more in English. It was indeed a joyful experience.
