Each individual is unique in their interests and so also would be their selection of intended major in the college. When it comes to me, I would like to select Business major. I want to pursue a career in the banking or business field.
During my high school days my dream was to become a professional snowboarder. I was very good at it, that I was able to gain the title of the second best snowboarder in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. But an injury shattered my dream of pursuing the career of a snowboarder. In the summer of 2012 I got graduated from the high school. During that time, I had joined at a small bank in my home city Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan. It was a three week internship. I had joined not out of my own interest but as per the suggestion of one of my friends. At the bank, my job was to assist the manager in the finance department. Slowly I started liking my job as it became manageable to me. I had learned a lot about banking and finance during that internship time.
Along with providing a decent income and making a positive impact on my credibility, it improved my employability skills like communication, time management, team work, etc. I was able to create a network of professional contacts from whom I may benefit throughout their lives. The job shadowing during the internship was highly beneficial. I am sure the internship with the bank would give me an edge in the job market, especially if I choose business major. Though the internship period was short, I realised that the employers see the interns as prospective employees. By giving that trial run in the finance sector, I could prove myself and others that I am a confident, capable as well as an industrious candidate. It reassured me that studying business would be the right choice that can satisfy my interests and abilities, though it is much different from what I had initially wished to accomplish, becoming a professional snowboarder.
Apart from gaining real world knowledge, I could observe my role in the job. I learnt to behave professionally and understand that there were things more important than my own happiness. This realisation helped me to be professional in my ways of dressing, speaking and helped me to act upon my age. I became more responsible and started giving my best effort in my jobs. Altogether, the internship helped me to become as visible as possible to make an impression and approach anything with s positive “Can do” attitude. I feel happy that I joined as an apprentice in a bank, as that helped me to figure out what I wanted to do in the future. That was how the interest to pursue my studies in business was instilled in me.
