In her article The Hunger Games, Lisa Schwarzbaum tells about a movie adaptation of a famous bestseller The Hunger Games. She portrays the main heroes of the story and discusses whether the cast was successful. She suggests that Jennifer Lawrence was a generally great choice for Katniss, the main heroine while the choice of Josh Hutcherson as Peeta may be controversial. Her main thesis is that the movie is an overall good adaptation of a book with a great cast, however, possessing slight differences from the book.
The main thought that flows through the article Why Mad Men Is Bad for Women is very coherent with its name – the series creates bad image of the womanhood. The author describes main heroes of the show, their life, and decisions over the course of the story. The main message, however, is not to retell the whole plot but to find an explanation of why they do it. By telling the stories of male heroes, Don Draper, Roger, Pete Campbell, and others, she conveys that men are depicted in the show as inherently superior. No matter what they do or who they are, they always come off clear. Female heroines Betty, Peggy, and Joan, in contrast, are all depicted in an unattractive light. Instead of developing into bright, socialized and happy personalities, all of them make a train of wrong decisions and end in a somewhat hardly understandable bad way. Moreover, they are depicted as being the only ones guilty of their misfortune. The main message that the author tries to convey is that the series show that the world favors men not women and depicts womanhood in a bad light.
My word of choice is astutely. I can recall seeing it a few times before, however I never used it in my writings. Now I will definitely start to do it.
Astutely is an adverb formed from the adjective astute. Astute represents someone who is capable of accurately assessing situations or people and turn it into own advantage. Astute can be used in both positive and negative contexts.
I met this word in the article Why Mad Men Is Bad for Women where the author used it to characterize the commentary made in Saturday Night Live about Don Draper. She calls the parallel drawn between the magnetism of the hero, and James Bond fantasy astute because it is smart and goes straight to the point.
