The nuclear energy is a relatively cheap energy source for the increasing energy needs. Nowadays, it is relatively safe energy in terms of technology. This means, that the current state of the nuclear plants have the technical ability to control the nuclear fission, project accidents, and some of the disasters. The nuclear industry is constantly improving its safety.
The potential problem is the increasing quantity of the spent nuclear fuel. The facilities with high-level safety are required to store the spent nuclear fuel. The design of the facilities requires prediction of the various unexpected situations, including natural disasters, under which the facility has to remain stable and safe. In addition, the processes inside the spent fuel tanks are not studied and controlled. Therefore, this is the additional source of hazard.
The uncontrolled source of nuclear energy danger is about terrorist attacks, which became the reality of the modern society. There is always the probability that a nuclear reactor or the spent nuclear facility are attacked. This is also a challenge for the engineering, since additional constructional and technological measures have to be implemented.
In addition, people become more concerned about the nuclear energy safety for the environment. People want safe air, water, and landscapes. The public opinion is often against the nuclear energy. However, the people have to understand that it is the only option of the increasing energy needs. Therefore, the extensive educational programs have to be implemented in schools, city councils, and local communities. This has to increase the society credibility to the nuclear industry.
The current situation with the fossil fuels and the increasing demand for the electrical energy causes the necessity for further nuclear energy development, and possibly for the new plants construction. In the future, the nuclear energy output has to increase.
