Management
In any organization and business, the employees or workforce serve as the life-blood. They run the company and keep it functioning. In a Dental Clinic, for example, this is in line with the service industry. It requires it employee (no matter what level, whether they be the main dentist or the staffs) to practice good customer-orientation and professionalism. If I would be given the chance to run a clinic myself, I need to ensure that my employees practice the mentioned significant values in order for my business to cater and meet the demands of the market. Employee motivation and involvement, in my opinion, are two important aspects to be promoted within the organizational culture. Motivation is linked to individual behaviour which is one of the focuses in organizational behaviour. In order to keep the level of motivation high in the organization, positive behaviours must be reinforced using rewards.
Positive reinforcement can come from any forms such as material rewards or recognition. High motivation is important in the organization because it makes employees function (if not more than) what is expected from them. Individual behaviour also greatly affects the totality of the organization if it is not managed well, because it will rub off other employees in the future. In a dental clinic, punctuality is vital. Since there are many clients going in and out of the clinic voicing out their dental concern, it is important for the staffs to be present and come on time.
Although, there will be a separate system to check the attendance of the employees, I still need to monitor the attendance personally. I chose to focus on attendance, because employee visibility is important especially in business like dental clinics. I can reward employees on a weekly basis with simple things such as discount coupons or any material they can use in their office. The rationale behind it is that if they see that their efforts of always coming in for work on time are appreciated, they will most likely repeat the behaviour. In addition, if positive behaviour is appreciated, negative behaviours in the same sense must be reprimanded in order to be corrected. Employees who are always tardy or were absent without any advice to their direct supervisor must be made aware of their wrong actions. The first thing that must be done is to talk to the employee verbally and ask what happened. It is important to clear things out first before giving out sanctions or punishments. Punishment, in this case, may come in forms of suspension or even removal from work depending on the gravity of the negative behaviour.
In any organization, it is important to ensure that the level of awareness of the employees with regards to their behaviours at high. This is to assure that their functions are at par with what are expected from them. Negative behaviours must not be tolerated because it will later contribute to the negative image of the company. If clients see that the employees are always late in the clinic, they will think that the service of the clinic is always late as well. It is important that the employees serve as the picture of what organization culture is being practiced i general. It is important to encourage positive organizational behaviour and discourage its negative counterpart. The use of reinforcements (either negative or positive) and punishment is an important managerial tool to be utilized properly to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization.
