Introduction
A leader is someone who inspires other people and guides them on what to do. Leadership can be termed as a practice of public influence where one individual can incorporate the help and support of members of an organization towards achieving a common goal. Directors are good examples of a leader and exercise of leadership.
Changes that should be made by the new director
How to develop a sense of urgency among workers
The director can develop a sense of urgency among the employees by developing the nursing home’s mission and vision. The director should also ensure that each employee know his or her role to play. The director is also supposed to show seriousness and commitment in his/her duties, this will in turn motivate employees to realize the sense of urgency in the home. Sharing of information and data clearly is also another way of creating urgency among the employees.
Displaying an unrelenting desire and a self-drive towards attaining the set targets of the nursing home is also another way that a director can use to get the sense of urgency into the employees. According to Daft (2010), positive coercion director-employee interaction can also be used to instill a sense of urgency among the workers due to the all-time supervise
Guiding coalition
The guiding coalition should involve those employees with leadership qualities and are committed to the vision and mission of the nursing home. Employees of the necessary expertise must be in the coalition in order to make credible decisions. Credible employees should also be incorporated in the team so that the team’s pronouncements are taken seriously by the employees. Also, the people who are included in a guiding coalition should bring on board diversified thinking and views, experiences and unique skills to help the nursing home achieve its new status (Kotter 1988).
Compelling vision
A compelling vision is that which requires immediate attendance for an organization to stay focused on the purpose. The new director might design his/her compelling vision as making sure that all the hospital beds are filled, and the nursing home’s public image is better. The director needs to analyze the current situation of the nursing home and form long term, but urgent visions to be achieved. The factors the director should consider while making the compelling vision include the availability of resources to achieve the vision. Objectivity is also another factor to put into consideration while developing the compelling vision. The director should also make sure that the compelling vision is appealing to the employees and all the stakeholders involved. Taking in more patients in the Harpeth Gardens nursing home and improving on its already tinted image can be merged together to form the compelling vision of the new director. This compelling vision of the nursing home will ensure that the director calls upon the commitment of all the employees of the nursing home to work towards the vision.
Resistance to changes
The implementation of the new changes and plans by the new director will not go through without some resistance. Employees’ royal to the previous director will find it difficult adopting the terms set by the new director, and thus will develop some resistance. The nurses and the supporting staff will especially be resistant to increased taking in of patients. Increased taking in of patients will mean added duties to them. The employees can resist by inciting fellow employees not to adopt the new strategies set by the new director. The employees can also resist by not approving some of the decisions to be made in consultation with them. To overcome this resistance the director can include the vocal and credible employees in his decision making and implementing team. The director can also use the values, rules, and regulations of the nursing home to overcome resistance by employees. Positive coercion can also be used to persuade the employees into working with the new director.
