Evidence based management applies facts and figures in order to make the correct decision in an organization. The essay by my classmate is simplistic in that it holds that the facts are easy to obtain and apply. My classmate assumes that evidence based management is ideal in managing today’s business organizations. However, this is not the case in reality. Reliance on intuition and experience proves worthwhile, despite technological advances that have enhanced communication.
One of the reasons that make managers use intuition is because evidence based management is contradictory. The management techniques proposed by experts are subjective, and often contradictory. Different management advisors base structures their advice on different and varied reasoning. They provide a varied interpretation of facts, as a result. In order to improve employee performance, for instance, some experts propose strict policies whereas others propose moral encouragement and motivation. These experts back their arguments by figures, hence providing contradictory views.
The other basis that renders evidence based management inapplicable and ineffective is its flaws. There are numerous books and journals that provide facts and figures for use by managers. Out of the 30,000 business books and thousands in print annually, at least 15% contain flawed information. This information is flawed since authors of these books have an approach of management as an art. They approach critical management issues without prior thought hence making the information illogical and unreliable. Managers, therefore, opt for intuition and experience in decision making.
Evidence based management is effective if information is accurate and applicable to a specific managerial context. In the event that the information is contradictory or flaw filled, its use will impact negatively on the business.
