Transforming the lives of special needs children through speech and audio therapy is my life’s vocation. I am that therapist who endeavors in going those extra and challenging miles to ensure that any special needs child has the capacities to obtain his or her full potential at an early age. There is nothing more edifying than to witness children develop fundamental learning skills that serve them throughout their lives. My passion for being a special needs children changemaker began when I was a kid in middle school. As a member of our school’s band, we performed for a group of these remarkable children. I felt galvanized and knew that my overall calling focused on improving their lives through empowerment tools. Speech-language and audio pathology became the career path that my empathetic heart instructed me to follow.
Before participating in this dynamic program, my academic experience also afforded involvement with Lehman College’s, Leaders Involved for Everyone (Lehman LIFE). My volunteer work with Lehman LIFE in 2015 elevated my self-confidence. Through this enterprising service organization, students gain a comprehensive insight of local community needs with assisting at soup kitchens and food pantries and coordinating cancer awareness walkathons and parks’ restorations. Altruism with Lehman LIFE also extended to other world regions. During spring 2015, our group traveled to Jinotega, Nicaragua. In this remote setting, we collaborated with grassroots leaders to build houses for two local families. Another fulfilling accomplishment includes community service at the Ecuadorian consulate after the country’s devastating April 2016 earthquake. I assisted with fundraising efforts with the Bronx’s Co-Op City’s Police Department to collect and to bring donations to the Consulate, before transferring these funds to Ecuador. Through both humanitarian efforts, I know supported communities in dire need.
Obtaining my Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Lehman College in June 2016 let me reach my second greatest milestone. I graduated with honors from the Speech-Language-Hearing Department and maintained an overall 3.7 GPA while working full-time, volunteering, and participating in a Bollywood dance club. The knowledge acquired from my undergraduate program allows me to work as an Early Intervention Service Coordinator at the City-Pro Group that serves New York City’s five boroughs. My employment at City-Pro lets me liaise with both parents and therapists to ensure the best services for children with disabilities and developmental delays and to create individualized goals for each child. Another rewarding job component is preschoolers’ transition planning, where I coordinate with parents and a school district’s committee or CPSE. Each learning episode complements my interpersonal skills, teaches leadership abilities, and ultimately broadens service competencies.
As I remain profoundly committed to the speech and audio pathology field, obtaining a master’s degree from __________ ensures that I augment aptitudes to provide the best services for children with disabilities. Furthermore, I am cognizant that my life’s critical mission is to motivate this at-needs population so they can progress towards independent and productive adult lives.
