Since middle school, I have been interested in Business related majors. I was influenced by my mother, who is a Japanese professor. She has always told me that if I wanted to make myself useful and start my own business, school was the best place for me to learn those skills in order to solve problems of the future. She made me realize that I need to accumulate as much as possible knowledge and find the connection between books and society. The reason for which I chose to major in management science for the undergraduate school is because I would get to assimilate the basic knowledge of economics and management, including marketing and statistics. The program also teaches students how to make decisions based on large data collected from community, which plays a significant role in individual businesses, analyzing markets or corporations, and government politics as well. Not only am I interested in these fields, but also believe that they represent the main factors through which organizations can strive for success. Fortunately, I have completed my undergraduate school at University of California San Diego, from which I just graduated in June. However, I feel that I need more than my undergraduate degree for pursuing the desired business career. Therefore, I am currently planning on applying for graduate school, with prospects for a future MBA program.
I am an international student from China, with a multi-cultural background. I understand that I might have some disadvantages compared with local students. Therefore, I must study harder than the others in order to achieve higher competitive power in this society. However, I believe that being a foreigner could represent a huge benefit for me. I have an insightful understanding of the Asian culture, and in the same time I studied American culture for years, giving me the advantage of cultural diversity (Graen 227).
In addition, I have been more than interested in studying international business due to globalization tendency of trades, gaining significant insights about business trends and international competitiveness. I have worked as a student assistant at East Los Angeles College's Admission Office, where I was a full-time student. My daily tasks included filing documents and translating between Chinese and English. Because I am able to speak and read both Chinese and English, I assist the Chinese students who require help, and I also guide Chinese visitors within the school. Working for Admissions brought me closer to understanding the American culture. I have learned not only how to communicate with others, but also how to get along with my co-workers in the office and to value teamwork in the business world. Moreover, I got an offer from WholeRen Education LLC for a Marketing Intern role after I graduated. My duties include exploring potential customers and opportunities of marketing campaigns to expand the current customers’ base, planning, developing, implementing and evaluating business projects. I believe that successful businesses could not exist without sales and marketing, and this was the reason for which I chose this internship, applying marketing theories in practice, from entry level position.
My undergraduate degree taught me the technical aspects of economics and provided me with an understanding of the concrete foundation for doing business, but master school can make me explore and experience the differences between school and business in real life situations. After I learned about Graziadio School of Business and Management, I felt that Master of Global Business program fits entirely to my needs. As I have an economic academic background, I can learn more about accounting, data analysis, leadership, managerial finance, and marketing management in master school. With all these knowledge that I could assimilate and all the real business experience I could gain from Pepperdine, I will be very confident on my future, and I could develop a strategy for optimizing the opportunities to progress my career path.
I want to be a successful business-woman, the kind who is not afraid of failing and has the courage to start over. My experiences as a student worker and marketing intern have given me the social skills, communication competencies, and leadership abilities that I need in order to succeed in my chosen major, but the master degree will help me consolidate my business career. For all the above reason, I have chosen Pepperdine University Master of Global Business.
