The persona of the poem January is Baron Wormser. Being a poet, Baron writes from a perceptive entirely diverse from his own. In the poem, he takes the voice and actions of the machine controller or driver. From the first paragraph, he says, “he tried to tease the old Chev into greeting”. He tries to start the engine, but the morning seems too pessimistic. Secondly, in the second stanza he describes how he pressed on the gas pedal putting on the engine. From this, it apparent that the poet had taken the place of a driver, he describes how he waited patiently for the engine to roar. Similarly, in the third section, he takes the voice of an engineer. He outlines his knowledge on machinery contained in the factory. His experience on machinery and engines is quite evident throughout the poem. The description confirms that the speaker in the poem is driver with mechanical skills and expertise.
The persona is describing the turn of events in January 15, he describes how life may begin with hardship but later on pursue the challenges. At five in the morning, he tries to tease his Chev engine without success. He describes the morning as pessimistic with full of negative results to each and every approach. He outlines how challenges goes easing down till the individual reaches a point of success. In his statement” Were hot coffee and winter sunrises”, he tries to show how one challenge follows the other. Though, he indicates that as time moves on all the challenges are neutralized. He describes this by” peace of servitude sighed and dreamed”, this shows a breakthrough in the challenges that he has been encountering in his life.
The audience is the societal members who at any one time have lost hope while trying something. He tries to speak to the quitters, to show them that the storm may be over if an extra effort is put on. In the poem, he describes “Machines were as natural to him as dogs and flowers”. He tries to show that you have the actual knowledge skills in performing a given task you are familiar with, but the natural hindrances outdo you. From his experience, he describes machines as “sensible”. The poet tries to cultivate the fact that after trying there is always light at the end of the tunnel. He uses January symbolically to represent the problems encountered by individuals in their day to day lives. At some point, he describes how individuals may lose hope in accomplishing their target. In the poem, he outlines this by his phrase "No way to live". In this, it’s very apparent that most individuals encounter challenges in there strive to live, though they reach a point of no return. They feel weak and worn out, everything working unexpected. Furthermore, he explains to the audience that life is always unwilling, and one must struggle to achieve success.
The persona applies descriptive language. He describes each turn of events from morning till he travels to the town. In some texts, he uses figurative language to assists the audience understand his information. He applies repetition to create emphasis of what was expected of him to help reduce the January misery. To some extent the poet also applies reflection, seems worried about the morning encounters that have led him being pessimistic about everything. In his poem, he applies onomatopoeia, for instance he uses the phrase” Wheezed”, which imitates the natural sounds made by wind as it blows. In addition, he uses flowing and gentle rhythm to help the public understand his attitude towards his ideas. The persona is very mournful, he describes the morning as misanthropic, this indicates that he regrets why the morning has such negative effects. If his attitude remains constant in the poem, he can improve the ideas by use of metaphors and similes. On other instances, he can apply personification to the ideas to help develop a stronger and under stable theme.
In case the attitude changes, the poet uses formal language to help show the seriousness of the subject. On other cases, he may apply informal language that is boosted by use of metaphors, rhyme and irony to describe given scenarios. In the poem, the poet is indirect with the hidden meaning of the actual poem. He is full of other language devices such as imitation of natural language, similes and metaphors in an effort to communicate his point to the audience.
