The police officers play an imperative role in a country’s law enforcement system. As citizens, we depend on them to protect us and always expect them to treat use equitably irrespective of our race, religion, sex orientation, gender, ethnicity, race, national origin, or social and economic background. Police stops are frightening to many individuals. The best thing to do to avoid completely coming across the police officers is always obeying the law. For those who are fond of breaking the law, the article by Mike Riggs, "An Ex-Cop's Guide to Not Getting Arrested," advise them to be invisible to the police.
It is vital to understand the way to engage the police officers if one is stopped. The first thing that one should do when stopped by the police officers for questioning is complying and staying calm. Chris Rock in his video, "How Not to Get Your Ass Kicked by the Police! [NAPISY PL],” advise us to stop immediately when we see police lights in the mirror. Phil Berg in his article, "10 Tips to Avoid Speeding Tickets,” reflects on the tips recommended by Richard Diamond to evade the speeding tickets. Among these recommendations include keeping a low profile, being ready for everything, and keeping quiet, among others. In essence, complying with the police stops prevents them from harassing us and taking us to jail.
It is disheartening to note that social, economic background and race have been factors in some few cases of police stops in the United States, especially in the neighborhoods inhabited by the blacks. Some police officers have been heavily criticized for harassing the black Americans. In spite of these few incidents, I believe that the system is not broken because the police officers in numerous states do not discriminate against the black citizens or the people from the poor backgrounds when stopping them.
