This article discusses the mechanism of poverty reduction that entails giving the disadvantaged money provided by Paul Niehaus and Michael Faye in their excerpt. The authors address the prominent issue in the international community of how to alleviate the suffering of the poor. The globe has held on to the perceptions that giving the disadvantaged persons money will only make them lazy. The individuals will not learn how to work for the income and end up being drunkards. Faye and Niehaus do not believe that assisting the poor with money will result in the negative impacts. Contrastingly, the writers think that providing them with an income will motivate them to do better and new things with the cash such as acquiring education, renting conducive apartments, buying adequate food, etc. International organizations such as World Bank, UN, and the European Commission are set to conduct a trial test of providing the poor with a monthly income in Kenya to see whether their living conditions will improve (Faye and Niehaus, par. 5).
Considering that humanitarian and volunteering firms have attempted to utilize alternative strategies to alleviate poverty such as giving food and utilities to the disadvantaged and the persons end up selling the items for cash. The focus of providing the poor with a steady income seems like the appropriate way of bridging the social status gap. The debate has various perceptions with people saying that it would be unethical to pay people for nothing while others support the idea of sharing the resources of those with plenty with those who have nothing. It is possible that one dollar every day can change the life of someone in an underdeveloped nation who does not have basic necessities (Faye and Niehaus, par. 10). The idea may not be popular with a lot of people, but it deserves to be tested to identify whether it is the long-awaited solution for curbing poverty in the planet.
