Power is defined as the ability to produce effects on others. A leader is often thought of having power and influence over their followers. A leader can be associated with the characterization of power by authoritatively ruling over his or her subjects. My father is called Fhaid Away uni. He is the best illustrative figure of power that I know. He can exercise different sources of authority in various leadership scenarios, for instance at his workplace, at home, in politics, etc.
My father is the boss at his place of work. He is the leader in the technical operations department and has fifty employees working under him. At his workplace, he holds the ability to provide his employees with rewards such as salary increment, bonuses, expense accounts, positive appraisals, promotions, better work schedules, status symbols, etc. These values come from his formal authority and position as the boss. If he wants to influence the employees, he can do so by awarding valued rewards and since people would wish to receive such rewards they will comply with his wishes. This is an excellent example of bonus power. However, premium power should not frequently be used since people may later get used to their relationship with their leader as purely for economic relations; and might hereafter expect to be commended at every instance they are requested to work on something innovative. It would, therefore, be more wholesome for both the boss and the employee to view their relationship regarding mutual allegiance and friendship.
Humankind possesses an individual reference power when they are respected and liked by others. Referent power stem out of charisma, as the charismatic person effects others via the admiration, respect and trust from otherssss. Referent power is dependent on both the leader and the subject. For this case, referent power is the potential influence my father has due to the strength of the relationship between him and his employees. The employees comply because of admiration, personal liking, and the desire for approval they have towards him. During a given period, one employee received many complaints because he is slow at conducting the operations of the firm. Due to Mr. Fhaid’s referent power and the good relationship he has with his employees, he had a difficult time in disciplining and terminating the slow worker. This is because that action had an ultimate adverse effect on the organization because they were receiving poor reviews. Therefore, this type of power has its downsides and merits.
In different situations, a leader can exhibit multiple types of power. This is contrary to the idea that power involves ultimate authority. Power can entangle the leader, the subjects, and the situation contributing to the design that supremacy is dynamic and can include multiple factors. Though there is no one perfect leadership capability approach. However, using various types of power depending the circumstances, it can lead to successful leadership. In this example, Mr. Fhaid Alayuni displays many kinds of power to be an effective leader.
