Nowadays quite a number of school teachers, as well as professors are completely misled in their views towards the most correct, and acceptable form of English language. This partially happens because of the lack of training in language studies, which results not only in the misleading of students, but also in linguistic discrimination of them. If people fail to accept the diversity within the English language, this can turn into a risk of teaching in ways that are both culturally and linguistically non-responsive. That is the exact reason, why sociolinguists are now trying to change the current state by explaining that there is no “good” or “bad” dialect. According to experts there is nothing as the correct form of English as SAE (Standard American English), because English language varies significantly among the speakers around the world; moreover, it differs even among the native speakers themselves.
Therefore, wrong assumptions about language can develop negative judgments about different dialects and their speakers.
In the light of such situation the first myth seems the most actual to be reviewed. Sociolinguists determine English as a prestige dialect, thus, a variety of the language, which is used by a group of people that have social power. But there is nothing special about a standard, as its status is the direct result of the social dominance of its speakers. A standard can even have its own identifying features, but it will still remain, nevertheless, just a collection of regional variations.
Therefore, the determining factor for a standard variation of the language is the social power it holds. It does not matter to sociolinguists how it may sound, but SAE (Standard American English) is the required language for professional communication, formal writing, and studying in the U.S.A., which creates certain barriers to the availability of education and some professions. Moreover, linguists emphasize that SAE is not a language, accent, style, register, or set of rules, but is only a dialect of English itself.
