Thesis
Many of the events that shape the history of humans are always forgotten as soon as the key figures behind these events die. Some, however, leave a long lasting impact on the nature of human interaction. My goal in this presentation is to highlight an event which left a permanent mark on the relationship between the police department and civilian population in the United States during riots, pickets and peaceful demonstrations. This presentation will delve into the events shaping the Blood Sunday Incident in the southern State of Alabama.
Introduction
The civil war in America accomplished certain things including freeing the slaves and granting citizenship to African Americans. However, the emancipation rights were taken back by certain states in the South of America. Amongst the states notable for this acts was the state of Alabama. It is on the basis of the above that the Bloody Sunday Incident occurred. Bloody Sunday refers to an incident which took place on March 7, 1965 in the southern state of Alabama. It was a culmination in 1965 of the altitude of the modern civil rights movement.
Body
On that particular day activists organized a march in demand for voting rights. The march was to take place in the state of Alabama from Selma to Montgomery, the state’s capital. On the planned day of the event, a group of 600 people assembled at a downtown church in Alabama, prayed together and began a steady and casual walk marked in absolute silence, two-by-two through the city streets. The occasion was to be graced by Martin Luther King Junior, the face behind the civil rights movements at the time, but after having talks with the president, he decided against joining in the march. He chose to stay home town and preach at his local church.
In the absence of the dominant figure of Martin Luther King Junior, the task of leading the march fell on two individuals: Hosea Williams the leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and John Lewis the Chairperson of the Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). These two lead the group that had converged at the church through the city streets in what was expected to be a peaceful demonstration.
As the group was leaving Selma, they were stopped, at the end of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, by a group of 150 Alabama State troopers, sheriff’s deputies, and possemen who ordered the marchers to disperse at once. Almost two minutes after the warning had been announced, the troops advanced towards the marchers equipped and armed to the tooth with clubs, bullwhips and tear gas. A scuffle erupted leaving so many people injured.
Several injuries were recorded in that incident. John Lewis suffered a skull fracture. There were a record one hundred and fifty people who sustained injuries and were treated at the local hospital. This day is remembered in history as the “Bloody Sunday”. The events at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the state of Alabama became news in the whole of America. Horror pictures of men and women bearing wounds were shown in the living rooms of many Americans.
Conclusion
Following this incident, a very bad picture was painted of the police department. It became necessary for the police officers to adopt the use of different tactics. To date, adequate time is always given to marchers and demonstrators before police swift into action.
