Good Quality In America Essay Example

The term quality applies to a level of value an item, or a product of someone’s work, has for others. These items can have a low level or a high level of quality. While the value of something is indeed subjective, as a society we usually have a common understanding of what quality means. Value often is given to things of small quantity but high demand, this do not necessarily mean they are of high quality, just high demand. When value is given to an item of high quality it often reflects the level of work or effort given to the completion of that item. This does not reflect the amount of time donated but rather the degree of attention and care that was given, or pride used, to complete an item or task. The quality of a sporting event would reflect the degree of intensity used by those competing while the quality of a hand-made piece of furniture would reflect the material used and the degree of workmanship or skill devoted to it. Sometimes there is a direct correlation to the degree of passion someone has for their work and the quality level of that work, yet at the same time, someone could love doing something immensely yet still not be very good at it.
Quality most certainly ‘can’ be achieved in America, whether those donating the effort to produce things will care enough of about what they produce to make their items of a good or high quality is yet to be seen. At the same time because we are a consumer driven society we actually control to a degree, the level of quality of items produced by whether or not we accept or buy them. Different generations are consumed with different ideas and obsessions that direct them in various ways. The current generation is overrun with technology that has influenced its members to be able to desire things quickly without providing as much effort as in years past. The burden will be on them to make sure they do not become lazy over time in the work they do or the things they accept. Many American corporations have relocated outside our country to take advantage of paying lower wages to increase their profit. Whether that reflects on the quality of the items produced would necessitate comparison studies. Judging from a few of the televised presidential candidate debates this spring one might argue that the quality of our politicians has declined, unfortunately, because choices are limited , the quality of their ‘work’ becomes more squarely on their shoulders as individuals. As a society, we still value ‘doing the right thing, because it is the right thing to do’, which reflects a degree of hope that quality and the level of quality we accept will have a priority in establishing values in our society.
