You are about to interview a member of local authorities who has been living in your community for all his life. This is a man, married, has two children. He graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Sociology in 1989. Before the interview, you were not acquainted with each other.
1. Hello. Thank you for joining me for this conversation. My number one question is what event, in your opinion, changed the entire history of the USA in the most significant way?
Hello. I believe that the Industrial Revolution made the most sufficient and significant contribution to the economic well-being and standards of living that we have now. The USA suffered from civil war, ethnic conflicts, discrimination and so on and so far, and it was hard for the government to focus on something except politics. Standardization of gas production, invention of the pipes and advancement of the railway transport made our country the leading one in terms of economic development. Later, it resulted in increased steel production and improvement of its quality as well as led to the emergence of other businesses.
2. What was the cause of such remarkable and significant events?
I believe that the Industrial Revolution was something like a culmination, which was a result of many underlying processes in the society and economy, and production. People were on the edge, they needed a push, and the civil war was a trigger for significant economic processes and shifts in the minds of people. People were made willing to risk as their standards of living were not improving. People from the west won the civil war mostly due to development and desire to change the current state of affairs. At the same time, people who become the idols of this époque, just took their chances and succeeded.
3. Whom do you consider to be the most significant persons of those times?
The first entrepreneurs indeed built America. I am really proud of having such people as Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Carnegie and Morgan among my ancestors. Exceptional mind, willingness to risk, competitiveness – these are the virtues that those men shared and they shaped the development of the country. The USA businessmen are among those who are willing to risk in order to have it all. That is why the USA is a leader in the entrepreneurship. I believe that the contribution of the four abovementioned men is truly determination of the America’s success. They provided a framework and showed how money can be made. They showed how business can be managed. They were raised in low-income families, but managed to build empires relying only on themselves.
4. What do you think should be done in order to boost the economy of America as the Industrial Revolution did?
This question is not an easy one. The world has changed. It is more globalized and interrelated that makes it hard to breakthrough like America did at that time. Today America needs something more powerful that any revolutions the world had before. Currently, every country can use the benefits of railway and even air transportation, produce steel and gas. Therefore, the major breakthrough is still possible in technologies and healthcare industry. Innovations in these fields can provide the USA with exceptional competitive advantages and lead to further growth and development. But such revolution can boost the economy of any country, so the US should be the first in this. It is a hard task.
