Apparent from the two articles under scrutiny is the fact that racial and ethnic equality has long been a huge issue of concern particularly in United States where ethnic and racial diversity is well established. From the articles, it is evident that blacks are more predisposed to living in poverty over the whites. Though the majority of the blacks came to United States predominantly in 1980s and 1990s to seek economic opportunities; majority of them are still suffering poverty and segregation primarily from the majority white group. The basis of racial and ethnic equality in United States as established by sociologist in the article accentuates that the racial discrimination is apparently reflected in occupational attainment, education, health income, political power and residential segregation.
Though institutional and individual racism is on the decline in United States, the difference between the whites and the non-whites is still apparent and established. In essence, it is apparent that the relative success of the whites has been purchased in the expense of nonwhite’s freedom and rights. This is evident from the fact that whites are successful in general compared to other minority groups especially the blacks.
Another fact that is well presented in the article is the notion that blacks in the 1990’s were more involved in crime than any other community in the United States. As emphasized in the article, inequality as a factor fostered the alienation of the blacks from majority of the jobs a fact that fostered poverty hence crime in United States now that the majority of blacks were poor.
I concur with the fact presented in these articles essentially because racial and ethnic inequality is still apparent in United States though it has since suppressed in the contemporary times. In order to reduce instances of racial and ethnic inequalities, education, income, employment and politics should be used as a framework to suppress such issues. The two questions that emerge from the facts presented include:
- How is the government of United States addressing issues of Racial and Ethnic Inequality?
- What ways can America adopt to reduce instances of poverty in the minority groups?
