The aim of this essay is to present you with an answer to a question of troubling nature since it seems to raise lots of heated debate within human interactions and discussions. Attending college and its contribution to people’s professional success and personal evolution has always been considered to be a commonly shared belief. Nevertheless, the changes taking place in economy, the rapid changes in the market place and the constantly changing and demanding profile of our era and job vacancies and opportunities seem to have started generating lots of skepticism on the need for attending college. This essay will focus on the fact that despite the benefits of college, college attendance should not be considered the only unique choice as far as a person’s evolution is concerned. Nevertheless, special emphasis will be given on the significance of knowledge, which if not gained within the environment of college studies, then other ways of getting knowledge should be used and applied.
Positives and negatives of college studies
Attending college therefore is the procedure through which one is to be specialized in the professional field he/she wishes to. The knowledgeable background acquired through college education, is the one which will enable future-to-be professionals to enter the job field and perform well. A healthy economy requires healthy workers of any position who are happy with what they are doing.
If college education is to represent what one likes to study, then that means automatically that this person will enter the professional field feeling satisfied with what he / she has learnt and at the same time ready to practice his / her knowledge.
In addition, college education is a procedure through which one learns how to search for knowledge. Within the academic environment of a college one learns to love learning. This is according to many of those involved in the educational procedure the corner stone of the educational system.
Education fights against ignorance and pluralistic ignorance as well. Education is the only asset which cannot be lost if once obtained.
Attention should also be paid to the fact that education is not only knowledge. It is not only learning specific staff or getting specialized. Education is a whole procedure which leads people to their journey to learning and getting specialized as well as to learning themselves.
It is common knowledge that one who enters the learning procedure broadens his / her horizons and contributes to the overall evolution of himself / herself.
The difficulties, the obstacles met during the learning procedure, the collaborative and interpersonal skills developed on behalf of those learning are all internal procedures which provide people with self-confidence, strength, patience, respect and admiration.
On the other hand, there are many negative aspects entailed in the college education. People have gone through so much pressure and stress in order to be successful to enter and be accepted in the college of their choice.
All this stress is made even worse by the difficulties met within the years of their attending college. There are lots of difficulties entailed ranging from feeling even greater stress in managing to sit their exams successfully, in feeling powerful and strong enough although they may be away from their families.
Also, there are all these external factors which can make things difficult in college. Antagonism, lack of understanding themselves or the structure of their studies, the financial burden since college tuition is demanding, are obstacles which cannot be easily overcome.
But these negative aspects are nothing compared to the facts following one’s completing his / her college education. There have been many cases in which people who enter the professional field experience the greatest disappointment ever.
The fact is that nowadays the social and economic situation changes so rapidly that the socio-economic context which is valid when one enters college is totally different from the one he / she experiences when he / she finishes college studies.
In other words, a field which might have been chosen as one’s studies’ field may at the moment of graduation not be considered prosperous.
This is one of the worst case scenarios which one can experience. There have been many who have finally found a job in order to make their living which is totally different from what they had in mind and they had dreamt of when they had chosen their college studies.
Also, there have been numerous cases in which people have not managed to complete their studies either because they were disappointed by what they had first chosen or because they did not manage to meet the financial demands of their college education.
Either way it is easily perceived that college education is a double-edged knife. It can prove to be of beneficial or not effect on people. It is clear from the above mentioned descriptions and short analysis of both its negative and positive effects that college is not the guarantee either to success or to failure.
Reflections and conclusions drawn on the necessity of college education
Beyond any shadow of a doubt education is something important and crucial whose value cannot be overlooked. But education should not be exclusively attached to the concept and ideal of a college.
Knowledge nowadays is easily accessible through other sources like online education, seminars, practice, lectures, life-long learning.
The demands of nowadays era have changed education and have contributed into the adoption and use of other updated and more helpful and easily applied methods of learning.
It is not the only path one can choose. And there are no age limits for one getting educated. Life-learning education is a relatively recent ideal which has proved to be of great significance.
There are many factors which ought to be combined in such a way that college education can be successful. One of these factors is certainly the unpredictable factor of what humans ‘luck’. One ought to be lucky as well in combination with the best efforts put in the procedure of his / her professional success.
Paraphrasing a quote by Marcus Tullius Cicero concerning the importance of books and reading in one’s life, one could support the statement that a person without the proper education is like a body without a soul. Yet the proper education is not a merit which can be offered to people only through college. College is one of the ways offered to people to be educated but certainly not the only one.
