Gary Hamel touched on a very sensitive topic on organizations that are not only fit for businesses but also for human beings. He finds that amongst the most important inventions of last century “Invention of Management” was the most important one. Gary definitely has a different way of thinking when it comes to management, but I would agree with his ideologies. By citing examples from past Gary did support his argument of the changing management tools and techniques and the fact that all that need to be reinvented since businesses and societies changed. Human beings need to realign to new needs of today. He cited the challenges like exponential changes in things (like internet, devices, data, genome) and competition in contrast to 1900s where nothing grew this fast. I personally liked the example of reverse accountability which is very different way of management – in this method, an employee’s rates his immediate boss and the boss after. Not only that, people help their managers accountable in their failure. He raises some very good points on “where to look for the change management”. Change never happens in the top 3 organizations, it happens at the Fringe / most unusual places– he suggests to look at the web. He suggests that that values like openness, meritocracy, flexibility and collaboration can be brought into the tools of management to be successful. He gave examples of employees form Best Buy, Pfizer, and Microsoft to support his views. After all the discussion, Gary comes back to where he started “one cannot build a company that is fit for future until we build one that is fit for human beings”. The human aspect is most of the times neglected by organizations. Gary has a very different but innovative approach towards management which are human friendly. Bringing out the best that human beings are capable of and the enormously resilient nature, human being need to be taken care of before everything else. Resilient organizations can only be built with people who have the right to put things in perspective on their own.
