Reasons why ABC Company decided to dismiss Joey Roberts
Fair reasons
- Employees conduct
Joey Roberts was a person whose work ethics were questionable. One, she was a dishonest person. Two, she was corrupt. Three, she was disrespectful to the management. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated at ABC Company. Therefore, her dismissal was eminent. An employee without any work ethics, who takes bribes and lies not only to his colleagues, but also to her seniors has no place in the company.
- Qualifications for the job
- Redundancy
Redundancy is the cessation of work. The employee mentioned was not a hard worker. In fact she was lazy. He did not want any work at all. Therefore, she had to go.
- End of contract
Unfair reasons
- Pregnancy
Pregnancy was one of the reasons why Mrs. Joey Roberts was fired. This reason, together with any other maternity reason is unfair. For example, when a woman takes her sick child to hospital without permission or when a woman extends her maternity leave with an allowed amount of time.
- Family reasons
Examples of these reasons include paternity leave (adoption and birth), parental leave, adoption time off to aide dependents and adoption leave. Mrs. Roberts took a paternity leave. It was therefore unfair to dismiss her.
- Representation
There was a time that Mrs. Roberts acted for an absentee employee. This was because the said employee had other engagements. The company used this as one of the reasons to dismiss her. This was unfair since she was just helping her friend out.
- Part time employee
- Discrimination
Discrimination is frowned upon by all organizations. This may be in terms of age, gender, disability, civil partnership or sexual orientation. Being a woman, Mrs. Roberts got the first axe. This was unfair and out of taste with company’s regulations.
- Time regulations
Since the employee mentioned worked mostly at night as directed by the management of ABC Company, her employer, when it (the company) decided to restructure, Mrs. Roberts was one of the casualties. This was a great unfairness because though she worked at night, she was a performer.
Exit interviews
- Exit in interviews are conducted at ABC Company whenever an individual employee is living the company. The main reason why these interviews are conducted is to increase productivity and reduce employee turnover. Consequently, the high costs associated with turnover are reduced. The exit interview mentions some issues which the organization addresses. This stage fits into the separation stage of the employee’s life cycle (ELC).
- When Mrs. Roberts was leaving, an exit interview was conducted. When these interviews are conducted, employees give feedback. During the interview, the individual is asked some questions which can improve ABC Company. Examples of some of the questions asked are
- What are the main reasons why the said individual is living?
- What was the best thing the individual liked or hated about the organization?
- What, if changed or improved would cause the individual to stay at the organization?
- Would the individual recommend the organization to another person to work in?
- In the past, the organization collected data in exit interviews but never used them. Nevertheless, recently, ABC Company acquired software which was developed and popularized. The programs are used to streamline and facilitate the employee process of separation. It also makes separation trends to be easily identifiable since it allows surveys completion via the web. When this data is collected and analyzed, appropriate actions are taken to increase the effectiveness of the organization.
Stages of managing redundancies
What are the steps in managing a collective redundancy and managing benefits of both the employee and the company?
Communicate with the employee in writing inviting them for a meeting.
- Step two
Hold the meeting with the employee to discuss the redundancy. He or she has the right to be accompanied and to appeal the decision.
- Step three
Hold the appeal meeting, that is if the employee wants it and inform him or her of the decision.
Avoiding redundancies
- Establish an ad hoc approach. In here there are no established arrangements which are formal. They vary in accordance with every redundancy.
- Establish a formal policy. This is when the organization establishes an approach to be used when faced by redundancies.
- Establish a formal agreement. This is when the company sets out the procedure which is to be followed when redundancies are considered.
