Comparison of the facilities
Miramar Greenery is a program basically established with the aim of recycling all excess plant substance or matter into mulch which is made available for the people to purchase. This means that Miramar Greenery deals in recycling all plant and tree trash materials such as logs and branches, leaves and flowers, Christmas trees, shrubbery and brush, tree and trimmings and pruning, unpainted lumber and pallets and the dimensional lumber (San Diego, 2007). On the other hand Miramar recycling center is a center that was introduced to provide drop off points for most recyclable materials which cannot fit in either black bins or blue bins. Miramar recycling center usually deals with materials such as plastics, glass, scrap metal, old cars, steel beverage containers, used cooking oils, TVs, steel cans and computer monitors.
Both Miramar Greenery facility and Miramar recycling Center facility always charge a fee according to the trash or waste being dumped at their sites. Miramar Greenery usually charges the fee and even allows some discount depending on the size of the lorry or vehicle carrying the recyclables. Miramar charge fee based on items being dumped. For instance, it does not charge any fee for all accepted items that can be donated such as computers, TVs and mixed paper.
Discuss the suitability of the existing system in terms of sustainability
Miramar Landfill is a system that promotes sustainability in the urban areas as well as rural areas since it ensures that waste is managed in a proper and effective manner. This implies that Landfill system enables a sustainable urban landscaping process to be achieved. Most of the products donated can be useful to other people who cannot afford the items. This implies that waste products such as TVs, computers, computers CPUs and other useful items could be vital and useful other people who cannot afford the items. The system facilitates constant circulation recyclables into the economy. The process enhances the ability of the conserve the environment by reducing the rate of pollution. Dumping such items in inappropriate places can lead to soil, water and even air pollution. Therefore, through the introduction of the system, such pollution occurrences are limited and even eliminated.
The Landfill system ensures that a balance in the site through the cut and fill process. This provides more space for substances brought in the system to be recycled and those released for recycling and hence injected back for usage. It ensure that reusing of items such as stones, bricks and rocks, broken concrete and boulders are recycled and released back for reusing. In addition, the existing trees or plants can easily be relocated as well as incorporated into the new design. Therefore, once used materials can be remanufactured and refurbished items whenever possible. Most of these items can be donated into charitable organizations once recycled to carry out charitable services (San Diego State University., Miramar Landfill., & Miramar Greens Recycling Center, 1989).
What steps might be taken to improve each system?
There are numerous in which the system can be enhanced in an appropriate manner. First, the management can ensure that overcrowding of different items or materials is reduced to enhance efficiency. This will accommodate more products into the site and facilitate easy recycling process. Moreover, the system should ensure a balance between materials entering the site and those leaving the site. Train all the staff members such as kitchen, administration and maintenance employees in order to equip them with effective skills and knowledge needed in delivering quality and effective services.
