Immigrants arriving in America have a difficult time settling in their new environment due to the distrust of the natives and the fact that the latter view immigrants as destructive in the society. In many cases, the natives expect the immigrants to adopt their culture and abandon customs. Immigrants’ way of doing things is not easily accommodated in the American society hence, cannot be assimilated unless they improve their intellectual, social and economic life to fit into the culture of their new environment. Every immigrant is seen as a barbarian who pose a threat to social order. However, the prejudices and misunderstandings are misguided since there is no credible evidence that links immigrants to being destructive to the community. Immigrants are seen as people who are politically corrupt due to stereotypes that they are ignorant and inexperienced with others linking them to social problems such as gender inequality. Widespread bitter comments targeted towards immigrants make them opt to return to their countries of origin.
Most American natives are unwilling to cooperate with immigrants due to the unconscious beliefs that make them believe that they need not have an interest in the troubles of the outsiders. The reason for such acts is because the current social policies have been designed in ways that efforts are only focused on achieving an imaginary homogenous society. Racial and national differences are therefore disapproved by the majority who are keen on ensuring that the customs and habits of immigrants become extinct. However, social policies need to give a chance to immigrants and allow them to be easily assimilated in the society since they could be having habits and customs that are valuable for the community. Hardships immigrants face when adjusting to the life in American life need to be recognized and understood such that it is possible to make them have an easy transition from simple life to highly specialized and complex industrial life in America.
