The Open System Interconnect (OSI) model is a set of layers that provide the levels in which the information (or Network packets) takes different forms while travelling from one host to another host.
The OSI model has the following layers,
- Application Layer
- Presentation Layer
- Session Layer
- Transport Layer
- Network Layer
- Data Link Layer
- Physical Layer
(networks?, 2009)
Most of the time knowledge of these seven layers is taken to trouble shoot a network.
There are many jobs that require the knowledge of the OSI model. One of those jobs is the job of a Network Engineer that use the OSI model to trouble shoot the Network. In the following it’s a Network Engineer job description that requires the knowledge of OSI model.
Job Description
- A Network Engineer that can provide technical support in the performance and conservation of the production network.
- Plans, designs, troubleshoot and rectify problems in order to alleviate and enhance the network, meeting the customer requirements for both software and hardware.
- Provide Configuration and integration of different Hosts and provide solutions for new and live customer networks.

Skills Required for Network Engineer
- Analytical Skills: Network engineers have to be able to look at complex network systems and digital machines to find faults and problems and devise ways to remove them. They need to find room for improvement and optimize the efficiency of a network.
- Attention to Detail: Network engineers need to produce complex designs for communication networks, and need to confirm that the network systems will function efficiently.
- Leadership Skills: Network engineers can be become leaders of other engineers to design, create or operate the network. It requires good experience to obtain leadership.
- Organizational Skills: In many business developments like mergers and acquisitions two or more different networks come together as companies combine. In such a situation operating the new network can become a very demanding challenge.
