Technology and other advancements have caused the deterioration of the environment in which we live. Governments across the world are taking preventive and corrective steps to ensure the environment is preserved for future generations. Since, all living things are dependent upon their environments it is essential to ensure the negative impact of human activities is minimized. One of the methods that environmental managers are using is the use of the geographic information system (GIS) that helps them monitor the environment from different perspectives. The GIS system is not only used by environmental specialists but there are several users of this technology. The purpose of the GIS varies for every user and this is one of the major reasons that have contributed towards its popularity.
GIS technology is powerful software through which large amounts of environmental related data can be stored in a single place by using maps. This ability of GIS to locate specific environmental concerns on the map allows the software to be user-friendly; thus, attracting a wide number of users apart from environmental managers. This technology is being used by the private and public sectors, field analysts, the web, and international organizations. GIS does not limit itself to any one particular environmental concern. Amongst the several environmental factors it takes into consideration includes; soil stability, pesticide use, migration corridors, hazardous waste generators are a few amongst the several factors. The incorporation of several factors makes it essential for analytical tools to be present that effectively take into account all these factors, this is successfully done by the ArcGIS technology.
ESRI software developers and business partners have now merged to work together in order to maximize the benefits provided to the environment by the GIS technology. Software developers and business partners encourage the integration and sharing of the databases as it helps make informed decisions in favor of environmental management. ESRI has also ensured that an integrated workflow system is put into practice. Moreover, there have been steps to bring together businesses for the purpose of specific projects so information gathered provides the maximum benefits. With the aim of gathering more information, ESRI has also made sure that quality is not compromised. There are set quality standards which need to be met before that information can be deployed. The success of ESRI lies in its flexibility and ability to adapt to the changing and fast moving IT community.
There are several services and features which are offered alongside the GIS technology. The desktop GIS option has created convenience in printing ESRI maps. The sharing and viewing of these maps is also made convenient with this option. Data may also be used comprehensively for analysis purposes through the ArcView feature of GIS. Adding on, the ArcEditor and ArcInfo provide the option of editing and adding information to the GIS technology. The GIS is also useful for online users and this is possible through the ArcIMS.
GIS provides referenced data that is compatible with hardware and software simultaneously which allows professional users of GIS to use the GIS technology to its maximum potential. Furthermore, the mapping facility offered by GIS allows a large amount of data to be available on a single click and provides a more extensive analysis. This allows the users to explore more opportunities and capabilities by utilizing the existing information to improve the environmental conditions. The various features offered alongside GIS allows for solutions that would improve the environment and use natural resources and land most effectively. The quantification of data through the GIS technology further adds to maximize its use for corrective measure taken in favor of the environment.
